Ghana’s clock is kind to anyone who works with the US. When New York opens at 9 a.m., it is early afternoon in Accra, so a designer in Osu, a small exporter in Tema or a family whose children live in New York, Maryland or Texas can talk to the US in daylight. Here is how the hours line up, how a +1 number fits each kind of work, and what to check before you rely on it.

When do Accra and US working hours overlap?

Ghana is on Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+0, all year and does not change its clocks (IANA tz database). US Eastern time is UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer, Central is an hour behind Eastern and Pacific three hours behind, and US summer runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November (NIST).

Here is a US working day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Accra time:

Your contact is inUS summer, Accra timeUS winter, Accra time
Eastern (New York, Washington, Atlanta)1 p.m. to 9 p.m.2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Central (Chicago, Houston, Dallas)2 p.m. to 10 p.m.3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Pacific (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle)4 p.m. to midnight5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

So the shared hours are your afternoon. A block from 1 to 5 p.m. Accra time covers New York’s morning, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the US summer; from November to mid-March, move it to 2 to 6 p.m. West Coast clients start at 4 or 5 p.m. your time, so a slot before dinner covers their morning. Your own morning is the US night, which leaves it free for the work itself and for calls inside Ghana.

US clocks go back on November 1, 2026 and forward on March 14, 2027. Ghana’s clock stays put, so New York is five hours behind you in the US winter and four hours behind in the US summer. The US time-zone clock shows each zone right now.

How does a US number work from Ghana?

The TripoSIM US Virtual Number runs in the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, on the same phone as your Ghanaian line. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. You need an email address, a payment card and a short ID check with a photo ID and a selfie, about 2 minutes. You do not need a US address or an SSN.

Before you rely on it, one check matters. Rules on internet calling differ by country, and a call on the number is an internet call on your network. Check with your regulator or mobile operator, and keep your Ghanaian number for calls inside Ghana.

Texts from US senders reach your number in the US and show up in the app over your connection, and verification codes from apps arrive the same way. If your Wi-Fi router goes off with the power, mobile data keeps the app ringing, so leave it switched on.

Which setup fits your work?

Freelancers. Writers, designers and developers in Accra or Kumasi can take a US client’s call live at 10 a.m. their time, which is mid-afternoon for you. Put one number on your profile, proposals and invoices, with your hours in Eastern time. Upwork and Fiverr both sent their codes to a TripoSIM number in TripoSIM’s tests on October 3, 2026; keep your profile set to your real country. See the freelancers page and a US number for Upwork and Fiverr.

Exporters and small traders. If you sell shea butter, cocoa products or crafts to US shops and distributors, your buyers, freight forwarders and customs brokers call about samples, prices and ship dates. A +1 number on your quotes and email signature makes those ordinary US calls for them. If you run two lines of business, one person can hold several numbers, each with its own plan and voicemail greeting, so buyers hear the right business name. For export rules, ask your freight forwarder or customs broker; this post is about phone calls only. The importers and exporters page has more.

Diaspora families. Parents, brothers and cousins in the US can ring a US number instead of an international one, and you answer in the app in Accra. You can call them back with the included minutes, and anyone abroad can still reach you on it. Calls to family inside Ghana stay on your Ghanaian line. The families page covers how families split between countries use it.

How many minutes does a typical month use?

Take Akosua, a made-up example: she runs a small shea butter export business in Tema with buyers in Atlanta and New Jersey. She makes three 15-minute calls a week to buyers and to her freight forwarder’s US office, which is about 195 minutes a month, inside the 300 minutes a month to the US and Canada. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free.

The calls she receives are counted separately. Buyers ring her about twice a week for 10 minutes, about 87 minutes a month, and her brother in Houston calls every Sunday for about 45 minutes, about 195 more. That is roughly 282 minutes, just inside the fair use of 300 minutes a month for calls in. Above that, callers reach voicemail until the next month. If the Sunday calls run longer, she can call her brother herself, which moves that time to her outgoing minutes, or keep family on a second number with its own plan. The cost calculator works out your own month.

What should your contact page and voicemail say?

Give your hours in your caller’s time zone and say where you are:

US line: +1 (your number). (Name), (business), Tema, Ghana. I take calls Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern. Leave a voicemail at any time and I will call back the same US working day, or email (your address).

Write “call or email”, not “call or text”. A US area code makes you easy to call; it does not give you a US office, so give your real city. Voicemail messages can be up to 2 minutes, up to 30 a month, kept 30 days. The business contact checklist and the voicemail guide have more.

What can’t the number do?

  • No sending texts. It receives texts only. For written messages, use email or WhatsApp, which you can set up on the same US number.
  • No calls out beyond the US and Canada. Use your Ghanaian line for Ghanaian numbers.
  • No 911. It cannot call 911 or any emergency service, so keep your Ghanaian number for emergencies.
  • No internet, no ring. If your connection drops, callers reach voicemail. Give clients email as the backup.

The bottom line

From Ghana, US calls fit your afternoon: about 1 to 5 p.m. for New York in the US summer, 2 to 6 p.m. in the US winter, and before dinner for the West Coast. Give US clients, buyers and relatives a +1 number with your hours in their time zone, watch the fair use for calls in if family calls run long, and let voicemail cover your night. Check the rules on internet calling first, then test calls with the ten-check reliability test. For other countries, see US phone numbers by country. The plans page has both plans: $100 a year or $12.99 a month.
