What do you do with the code?

When you set up a TripoSIM US number, you choose by state or area code from the numbers available, right after payment and a short ID check. These are reference codes, not stock. If none is free in the code you want, pick an overlay in the same city or another nearby code; that is not a reason for a refund. Our area code guide helps you choose.

Area codes 212, 305, 312 and 415 standing over models of New York, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco

Why do big cities have several area codes?

When a city runs out of numbers, regulators add an overlay: a new code for the same area. New York's Manhattan has 212, 646, 332 and 917, and all of them are local there. Callers rarely notice which one you have, so a newer code is just as good for clients and family.

Does the area code change what you pay?

No. Every TripoSIM number includes 300 minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, whatever its area code. People in the US pay their usual rate to call any US code.

What if your code is not in the list?

This lookup covers 25 of the largest US cities. For any other code, see the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), which runs US area codes.

Short answer

A US area code is the three digits after +1. For example, 305 is Miami, Florida, on Eastern Time, and 312 is Chicago, on Central Time. Big cities have several codes, called overlays, that are all equally local. This lookup covers 68 codes for 25 major US cities, checked against NANPA in October 2026.
