What are the most common dialing mistakes?
- Leaving out the 1 after the exit code. The US country code is 1, so it is always needed from outside North America.
- Leaving out the area code. US numbers are 10 digits: 3 for the area code and 7 for the number.
- Adding a 0 before the area code, as you might for domestic calls in your own country.
Calling the US often? A US number with included minutes to the US and Canada lets you call over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and US contacts see a US caller ID.
Short answerDial your country's exit code, then 1 (the US country code), then the 3-digit area code and the 7-digit number. From most countries the exit code is 00, so a New York number becomes 00 1 212 555 0123. On a mobile you can type + instead of the exit code: +1 212 555 0123.
