“300 minutes” sounds like a lot or a little depending on who you are. For occasional calls to US clients or family, it is plenty. For someone who spends hours a day on sales calls, it is not. Here is how to work out which you are.
What does 300 minutes look like in real calls?
It is five hours of outgoing calls a month. That could be:
- 30 ten-minute calls
- 60 five-minute calls
- 150 two-minute calls
How far it goes also depends on billing. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. So a 61-second call uses two minutes, and a call of 2 minutes 5 seconds uses three. Lots of very short calls burn through minutes faster than the total talk time suggests.
How do you estimate your own use?
Take the calls you make in a normal week, multiply by the average length, then multiply by 4.3 weeks. Add a little for rounding.
| Your week | Monthly minutes (before rounding) | Fits in 300? |
|---|---|---|
| 5 calls of 10 minutes | about 215 | Yes |
| 12 calls of 5 minutes | about 258 | Yes, with a small buffer |
| 20 calls of 5 minutes | about 430 | No, you need two top-ups |
| 30 calls of 5 minutes | about 645 | No, consider a business phone service |
If you only call a few people each week, you will rarely hit the limit. Check your current phone bill for a real number.
Are incoming and outgoing minutes separate?
Yes. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number includes 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers. Incoming calls have their own fair-use allowance of 300 minutes a month. They do not touch your outgoing minutes.
If you go over the incoming allowance, callers go to voicemail until the next month starts. This matters if you put the number on a busy website. A lot of incoming calls can use up the allowance even if you rarely call out.
Outgoing calls go to the US and Canada only. If you need to call other countries, the minutes will not help. Our guide to calling the US and Canada from abroad covers what is included and what is not.
How do extra minutes work?
You can buy 100 extra outgoing minutes for $5 in the TripoSIM app, on either plan.
Top-up minutes are used after your monthly minutes, stay valid while your number is active and carry over when you renew. They are not refundable.
In practice, your included monthly minutes are used first and reset each month. Top-up minutes are only used once the monthly ones run out, and anything left over stays with you as long as the number is active. A heavy month does not waste a top-up you bought earlier.
Top-ups add calling minutes only. They do not add texting and do not raise the incoming allowance.
Does the plan fit you?
It probably fits if:
- you mainly use the US number for occasional calls, not a call center
- most of the people you call are in the US or Canada
- you have reliable internet and can keep the TripoSIM app able to ring
- you need neither outgoing texts nor 911 from this number
- voicemail is fine when you are offline
If you want to test your own numbers, the cost calculator shows the yearly cost with top-ups, and the plans page has both prices.
When is a different service better?
If you need thousands of minutes, call queues, several agents on one line, outbound campaigns, text replies or emergency calls, use a service built for that. A personal number is not a business dialer or a contact center. Our guide to US numbers for remote teams explains when to make that switch.
The short version
300 minutes is about five hours of outgoing calls, billed in whole minutes. Count your outgoing calls and your incoming calls separately. If you go over now and then, a $5 top-up covers it and does not expire while your number is active. If you go over every month by a lot, a different kind of service is the better fit.
