If you freelance, run an agency or simply have family in the US, there is a good chance a phone call to or from America is part of your week. Two things get in the way: the time difference, and the fact that some Americans will not dial a +20 number. Here is a phone setup from Egypt that works around both, with worked examples and the local rules to check first.

When does a Cairo working day overlap with the US?

In your late afternoon and evening. US Eastern time is UTC-5 in the US winter, from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March, and UTC-4 in the US summer, according to NIST. Egypt is on UTC+2 in winter, so in the US winter Cairo is seven hours ahead of New York.

US office hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Cairo time during the US winter:

US time zoneUS office hours in CairoA good call window from Cairo
Eastern (New York, Miami)4 p.m. to midnight4 to 7 p.m.
Central (Chicago, Dallas)5 p.m. to 1 a.m.5 to 8 p.m.
Pacific (Los Angeles, Seattle)7 p.m. to 3 a.m.7 to 9 p.m.

US clocks go back on November 1, 2026, so the table holds from then until mid-March. In the US summer, New York moves to UTC-4. Egypt’s own clock changes can shift the overlap too, so New York’s 9 a.m. can fall at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. in Cairo, depending on Egypt’s clock at the time. Check the current difference on the US time-zone clock before you fix a weekly call, and check again whenever either side changes its clocks.

Check your weekend as well. If your week runs Sunday to Thursday, the US Friday is a working day you are off, and your Sunday is their day off. Name your working days in your voicemail greeting, so a Friday caller knows when to expect you. The best time to call US clients has more on clock-change weeks.

Does an app-based US number work in Egypt?

The TripoSIM US Virtual Number runs in an app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so it goes wherever your phone goes. That is also why local rules matter: on your network, a call on the number is an internet call.

  • Rules differ by country. Before you rely on calls on the number, check the rules on internet calling with your regulator or mobile operator, and keep your Egyptian line for local calls.

Texts are a different case. A text from a US sender reaches your number in the US and shows up in the app over your connection, like any notification. Verification codes from apps arrive the same way.

If calls on the number do not work on your connection, it can still give US contacts a +1 number with voicemail, and receive texts and codes. Test before you print the number anywhere. The ten-check reliability test covers calls in and out, a locked screen, Wi-Fi and mobile data, and voicemail.

How does a freelancer in Egypt use a US number?

Take a hypothetical front-end developer in Cairo with two clients in New York. Her contact page says:

US line: +1 (her number). I return calls Monday to Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. Cairo time, which is 9 a.m. to noon Eastern in the US winter. Leave a voicemail at any time. For written questions, email me at (her address).

In a typical week she places two status calls of 20 minutes and four call-backs of 5 minutes: 60 minutes a week, or about 260 minutes a month. That is inside the 300 minutes a month to the US and Canada that the plan includes. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. Calls her clients make to her come from a separate fair use of 300 minutes a month. If she goes over, extra minutes cost $5 per 100.

The number also receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps. TripoSIM tested Upwork, Fiverr, Payoneer, Wise and PayPal on October 3, 2026. Register on each platform with your real country, as each one asks. See a US number for Upwork and Fiverr and the Payoneer setup guide. The freelancer page has more worked examples.

What about agencies in Cairo?

A design, marketing or software agency with US accounts can put a +1 number on its website, proposals and invoices. Each TripoSIM number is one person’s line in their own app, not a shared line that rings several people. So the usual setup is one number per person who talks to US clients.

One person can also have as many TripoSIM US numbers as they like on one account, each with its own plan and voicemail greeting, for example one per client brand. Do not suggest a US office you do not have. “US line, answered from our studio in Cairo, 9 a.m. to noon ET” is honest and clear. The agencies page covers setups and minutes per account manager.

Can family in the US reach you on it?

Yes. For a brother in New Jersey, calling your +1 number is an ordinary call to a US number. Calls family make to you are included with the 300-minute fair use. Calls you make to relatives in the US or Canada use your outgoing minutes. Two calls a week of 20 minutes come to about 174 minutes a month, within the plan.

Relatives in the US and Canada can also text the number, and you read the text in the app. Relatives texting from an Egyptian number are a different case: texts from senders outside the US and Canada usually cannot reach US numbers. The families page has more on staying in touch.

What should your voicemail say?

Most US calls will arrive outside your call window, so the greeting does a lot of work. Say your name or business, the hours you call back in Eastern time, your working days, your email address, and what callers should leave. Voicemail messages can be up to 2 minutes, up to 30 a month, and are kept 30 days. The voicemail guide covers setup.

What can’t the number do?

  • No sending texts. It receives texts only, so write “call or email” on your contact page.
  • No 911. It cannot call 911 or any emergency service; keep your Egyptian line for emergencies.
  • No calls out beyond the US and Canada. You cannot call Egyptian numbers from it.
  • Not a team line. It is one person’s line for personal and small-business use, and call centers are not allowed.

When is another option better?

  • Clients expect a text reply. Use email or a chat tool for written questions, or choose a service that includes texting.
  • Most of your calls are to Egyptian numbers. Your local line is the right tool for those.
  • Several people must answer one line. Call queues and shared lines need a business phone system built for teams.

The bottom line

From Cairo, call New York from about 4 p.m. in the US winter, and check the current difference in the US summer, because Egypt’s own clock changes can move the overlap. Publish a +1 number with your hours in Eastern time and “call or email”, record a greeting that works while you sleep, and return calls in one fixed window. Check the rules on internet calling where you live, and test calls before you rely on them. Compare the two plans, $100 a year or $12.99 a month, on the plans page.
