A US number for vacation rental hosts who live abroad

Verify Airbnb with a +1 number, and let guests, cleaners and repair people call you in an app wherever you live.

Short answer

Hosts who live abroad and rent out a US home use a US virtual number for Airbnb's phone verification and for calls from guests, cleaners and repair people. The TripoSIM number receives Airbnb's 4-digit code, and TripoSIM tested Airbnb on October 3, 2026. It cannot send texts, so answer guests in Airbnb messages.

Why does a host abroad need a US number?

Airbnb asks hosts to verify a phone number before listing, and guests before booking. It uses that number for sign-in codes and for contact during a trip. If you live in Europe, the Gulf or Asia and host a place in Florida or Arizona, the people who keep the listing running are all in the US: guests, cleaners, a handyman, the neighbors. A +1 number is the one they expect to call.

The TripoSIM US Virtual Number runs in an app on your phone over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Calls ring like normal calls, and callers leave a voicemail when you are asleep.

How do you verify Airbnb with the US number?

When you verify a phone, Airbnb texts you a 4-digit code. The TripoSIM number receives it in the app. On desktop:

  1. Click Profile, then Account, then Personal information.
  2. Go to Phone number and click Edit.
  3. Select United States (+1) and enter the 10 digits.
  4. Click Verify and type the code from the TripoSIM app.

For two-factor authentication, Airbnb lets you pick a text or a phone call for the passcode, and the number takes both. Airbnb requires two-factor for hosts in the European Economic Area. Do this at home, before the season starts. The Airbnb guide has every step and what to do if a code does not arrive.

What do guests see, and how do temporary numbers work?

After a reservation is accepted, Airbnb shows the phone numbers on your account to the guest. For eligible reservations in the US and Canada, Airbnb may assign temporary numbers instead, so neither side sees the real one. Airbnb says they work for calls and texts until 48 hours after checkout, and WhatsApp is not supported on them. Its help page on temporary numbers explains how they connect.

Who calls a host, and how do you answer?

Who calls a vacation rental host abroad, and what helps
CallerWhy they callWhat helps
Guests before arrivalDirections, parking, check-in timeAnswer in Airbnb messages, so the details stay in the trip thread
Guests during a stayWi-Fi, appliances, something not workingA house manual answers most of it; your local contact handles visits
CleanersAccess, damage found, supplies running lowA fixed call after each turnover
Repair peopleQuotes, timing, getting inQuotes and invoices by email as well
Neighbors or the HOANoise, parking, building rulesYour greeting says when you call back

Pick an area code near the rental, so local callers see a familiar number; the area code guide lists them. Record a greeting with your name, the listing, the hours you call back in US time and your local contact for urgent problems. Voicemail messages can be up to 2 minutes, up to 30 a month, kept 30 days.

How do you reply when the number cannot send texts?

The number receives texts from US and Canadian senders, so you see a guest's or cleaner's message in the app. You cannot answer a text from it. Plan around that:

  • Guests: answer in Airbnb messages. That keeps the conversation where Airbnb can see it.
  • Cleaners and repair people: call back, or agree on email. You can also set up WhatsApp on your US number, because the number receives the WhatsApp verification code, so the same +1 number works for chat.
  • Your house manual: say "message us in the Airbnb app or call", not "text us".

What about emergencies at the rental?

The TripoSIM number cannot call 911. Your guests call the US emergency number from their own phones, so put the full street address in the house manual where they can find it fast. Then plan two more things:

  • A local contact: a co-host, cleaner or property manager who can get to the home within hours, with their number in your greeting and the house manual.
  • Your own local line: keep a mobile line where you live for emergencies there.

How many minutes does a host use?

Calls guests and cleaners make to you are included up to a fair use of 300 minutes a month. Only calls you make, such as calling a cleaner back, use your 300 minutes to the US and Canada. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. Three typical hosts, worked out for a year:

Calls out about your rental, by how busy it is
ExampleCalls out to the US and CanadaExtra minutesOne year on the yearly plan
One listing3 calls a week, 5 minutes each: about 65 minutes a monthNone: within the included minutes$100
Two listings in high season8 calls a week, 6 minutes each: about 208 minutes a monthNone: within the included minutes$100
Plus repairsthe same, plus 2 calls a week of 15 minutes: about 338 minutes a month5 × $5 = $25 a year$125

Incoming calls do not use your minutes (fair use 300 minutes a month). Each plan includes 300 minutes a month out; extra minutes are $5 per 100, and unused extra minutes carry over to the next month, so the year counts the packs for all 12 months together. Prices before tax.

The monthly plan is $12.99 with the same minutes, if you only host part of the year. Try your own numbers in the cost calculator. Have more than one listing? The same person can have as many TripoSIM US numbers as they like on one account, each with its own plan, minutes and voicemail greeting.

When is another option better?

  • Guests or cleaners expect text replies from the number: the TripoSIM number receives texts only. Use Airbnb messages, or a provider with two-way texting; see providers compared.
  • A team answers for many listings: the number is for personal and small-business use, and call centers are not allowed. A business phone system built for teams fits better.
  • You call people outside the US and Canada: calls out go to US and Canadian numbers only.
