From Kuala Lumpur, the US sits on the far side of the clock. New York opens at 9 or 10 p.m. your time, and California at midnight or 1 a.m. If you sell to US buyers online, coordinate inquiries from US patients for a clinic in Penang, or work in shared services in KL and take on US work of your own, answering live all day is not a plan. A voicemail-first setup is. Here is how the hours line up and how to run one.
When do Kuala Lumpur and US working hours overlap?
Malaysia is UTC+8 all year and does not change its clocks (IANA tz database). US Eastern time is UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer, Central is an hour behind Eastern and Pacific three hours behind, and US summer runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November (NIST).
Here is a US working day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Kuala Lumpur time:
| Your caller is in | US summer, Kuala Lumpur time | US winter, Kuala Lumpur time |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern (New York, Boston, Atlanta) | 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. |
| Central (Chicago, Dallas, Houston) | 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. | 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. |
| Pacific (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle) | Midnight to 8 a.m. | 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. |
Two windows are realistic. In your late evening, 9 to 10 p.m. Kuala Lumpur time is 9 to 10 a.m. in New York in the US summer; in the US winter that hour is 8 to 9 a.m. there, so start at 10 p.m. instead. In your early morning, 7 to 8 a.m. is 4 to 5 p.m. on the West Coast in the US summer, and 8 to 9 a.m. is the same slot in the US winter. Mind the date: Tuesday morning in Kuala Lumpur is still Monday afternoon in California, and your Saturday morning is their Friday afternoon.
Everything in between is voicemail’s job. US clocks go back on November 1, 2026 and forward on March 14, 2027, and each time both windows move by an hour in your day. The US time-zone clock shows each zone right now.
How does a US number work from Malaysia?
The TripoSIM US Virtual Number runs in the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi or mobile data. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. You need an email address, a payment card and a short ID check with a photo ID and a selfie, about 2 minutes. You do not need a US address or an SSN.
Before you rely on it, one check matters. Rules on internet calling differ by country, and a call on the number is an internet call on your network. Check with your regulator or mobile operator, and keep your Malaysian number for calls inside Malaysia.
TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. That works in your favor here: at night you can switch the phone off and let voicemail take the US calls. Texts from US senders and verification codes from apps reach your number in the US and appear in the app over your connection.
How does a voicemail-first day work?
- Set a greeting with your call-back windows in the caller’s time zone, such as “9 to 10 a.m. Eastern and 4 to 5 p.m. Pacific”.
- Play the night’s messages with your morning coffee. Sort them by urgency and note names, numbers and order or reference numbers.
- Call the West Coast back first, in your 7 to 8 a.m. slot in the US summer (8 to 9 a.m. in the US winter), while it is still their afternoon.
- Answer the rest in writing during your day, so the email is waiting when the US office opens.
- Call the East Coast back in your evening window, from 9 p.m. in the US summer or 10 p.m. in the US winter.
Which setup fits your work?
Online sellers. If you sell on Amazon, Etsy or your own shop to US buyers, a +1 number on your store and order emails gives them a line to call about an order, and voicemail takes the calls that land in your night. Amazon and PayPal were among the apps that sent codes to a TripoSIM number in TripoSIM’s tests on October 3, 2026. The online sellers page covers what each marketplace asks for.
Clinic inquiry lines. Clinics in Penang and Kuala Lumpur that see patients from the US can give them a +1 inquiry line. Pick one patient coordinator to hold the phone, put the call-back windows in the greeting, and keep patient names and treatment details out of it, because anyone who dials hears it. The line is for inquiries and call-backs; this post gives no medical advice. The clinics page has a greeting checklist.
Shared-services professionals. If you work with US colleagues at a shared-services center in KL, use your employer’s phone system for the day job. A +1 number in your own name fits the US work you do for yourself: recruiters, consulting clients or a side business. It is one person’s line for personal and small-business use, and call centers are not allowed, so it is not a team line for the office. See US numbers for remote teams for team setups.
How many minutes and messages does a month use?
Take Mei Ling, a made-up example: she sells handmade homeware to US buyers from Petaling Jaya. In a normal month she gets about five voicemails a week, about 22 a month, inside the 30 messages voicemail holds. She calls each one back, and most calls run about four and a quarter minutes. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. So each counts as 5, and 25 minutes a week comes to about 108 minutes a month, well inside the 300 minutes a month to the US and Canada.
In the US holiday rush, November and December, her voicemails double to about ten a week, roughly 43 a month. Her minutes still fit, at about 217 a month, but the messages do not: that is more than the 30 a month voicemail holds. So for those two months she adds “or email (address)” to the greeting and a contact form to her order page, and keeps voicemail for the calls that need a voice. The cost calculator works out your own minutes.
What should your contact page and voicemail say?
Give your call-back windows in your caller’s time zone and say where you are:
You’ve reached (business), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We return calls Monday to Friday, 9 to 10 a.m. Eastern and 4 to 5 p.m. Pacific. Leave your name, your order number and a good time to call, or email (your address).
Write “call or email”, not “call or text”. A US area code makes you easy to call; it does not give you a US office, so give your real city. Voicemail messages can be up to 2 minutes and are kept 30 days. The voicemail guide and the business contact checklist have more.
What can’t the number do?
- No sending texts. It receives texts only. For written messages, use email or WhatsApp, which you can set up on the same US number.
- No calls out beyond the US and Canada. Use your Malaysian line for Malaysian numbers.
- No 911. It cannot call 911 or any emergency service, so keep your Malaysian number for emergencies.
- No internet, no ring. If your connection drops, callers reach voicemail. Give callers email as the backup.
The bottom line
From Malaysia, the US working day falls in your night, so let voicemail take the calls and call back in two windows: your evening from 9 p.m. (US summer) or 10 p.m. (US winter) for the East Coast, and your early morning for the West Coast’s afternoon. Put those windows in the greeting in the caller’s time zone, keep an eye on the monthly voicemail limit in busy months, and give callers email as well. Check the rules on internet calling first, then test calls with the ten-check reliability test. For other countries, see US phone numbers by country. The plans page has both plans: $100 a year or $12.99 a month.
