How Signal delivers codes:TextCall

Signal is built around your phone number. If that number is a US number you keep, your Signal account stays the same wherever you live and whatever SIM is in your phone. This guide shows how to register, how to move an existing account to the US number, and how Signal’s PIN keeps it yours. Each Signal step is from Signal’s support pages.

How does Signal send the registration code?

Signal says you need a phone number that can receive an SMS or a phone call. It delivers the code as a text first. After a timer, you can ask for a verification call instead, and a voice reads the code.

The TripoSIM US number receives both: the text shows up in the TripoSIM app, and the call rings there too. TripoSIM tested Signal on October 3, 2026.

If you are moving Signal to a new phone and you set a Signal PIN before, Signal can also let you re-register with the PIN instead of a text code.

How do you register Signal with your US number?

  1. Get your number. Choose a plan, complete the short ID check and pick your US number in the TripoSIM app.
  2. Keep the TripoSIM app online with notifications allowed.
  3. In Signal, enter the full number: United States (+1), then the 10 digits, with no leading zero. Signal’s troubleshooting page asks for the full international number.
  4. Enter the code from the text in the TripoSIM app. If it is slow, wait for the timer and choose the call.
  5. Set your Signal PIN when Signal asks, and turn on Registration Lock (below).

How do you move an existing Signal account to the US number?

Signal has a Change Number feature: Signal Settings, then Account, then Change Phone Number. You type your old number, then the new US number, and Signal sends the code to the new one only. Your username stays the same, and people you have chatted with may see a note that your number changed.

Signal lists what you need first:

  • Your Signal account is active on your current phone.
  • The new number can receive a text.
  • You still have the old device. Signal says Change Number does not work if you lost your phone.

How do the PIN and Registration Lock protect you?

  • The Signal PIN is a number you choose. Manage it in Signal Settings, then Account. It is not the text code.
  • Registration Lock means that anyone who registers your number on another phone also needs your PIN.
  • Signal cannot reset a forgotten PIN. With Registration Lock on, you may be locked out for up to 7 days. The lock expires after 7 days of inactivity.
  • Keep the number. Signal says that if you lose access to your number, it cannot do anything for you. Keep your TripoSIM plan active: if a plan ends, the number is kept 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan, then released. Read why in our guide to number recycling and account security.

What if the code does not arrive?

Signal’s own checklist, adapted to a number that lives in an app. The code comes to the TripoSIM app, not your phone’s Messages app, so look there.

  1. Check the number you typed: +1 and the 10 digits.
  2. Check the TripoSIM app is online and can receive texts and calls, with notifications allowed.
  3. Turn off your VPN for a moment. Signal asks that *.signal.org and TCP port 443 are allowed.
  4. Too many attempts? Signal makes you wait, from an hour up to a day, before trying again.
  5. Still nothing? Contact TripoSIM support about the number.
