A Microsoft account covers Outlook, OneDrive, Xbox and Microsoft 365 for home. Microsoft sends security codes when you sign in on a new device or from a new place, and a phone number is one way to receive them. A US number in the TripoSIM app gets those texts over Wi-Fi or mobile data, wherever you live. Every Microsoft step below is from Microsoft Support.
How does Microsoft deliver its codes?
Microsoft sends a security code to your email, phone or authenticator app. With two-step verification on, it asks every time you sign in on a device it does not trust. With it off, it asks now and then, when there might be a risk to your account. The TripoSIM US number receives Microsoft’s texts in the TripoSIM app. TripoSIM tested Microsoft on October 3, 2026.
Microsoft says it will start phasing out SMS as a way to sign in and recover personal accounts. Use the US number alongside the Microsoft Authenticator app and a backup email, not instead of them.
How do you set up two-step verification?
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com and open the Security tab.
- Select Manage how I sign in to see the ways you prove who you are, and add your US number with +1 there.
- Under Additional security, find Two-step verification and choose Turn on.
- Follow the steps on screen. To use the Authenticator app, scan the QR code Microsoft shows.
Microsoft strongly recommends three pieces of security info: for example the Authenticator app, a backup email and your US number.
What if you lose access?
With two-step verification on, you always need two forms of identification. To reset a forgotten password you need two contact methods, and Microsoft sends you two codes instead of one. If you lose a contact method, your password alone will not get you back in, and Microsoft says it can take 30 days to regain access. Its support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details for you.
Keep the number too. If your TripoSIM plan ends, the number is kept 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan, then released. See number recycling and account security.
What if the code does not arrive?
- Check the country code (+1) and the 10 digits in your security info.
- Check the TripoSIM app is online with notifications allowed.
- Use another method: the Authenticator app or your backup email.
- “Incorrect password” in an old app or on Xbox 360? Create an app password; some apps cannot take security codes.
- Still stuck: use Microsoft’s sign-in helper or contact Microsoft Support. For the number itself, contact TripoSIM support.
For other apps, see which apps send codes to the number or the app check tool.
