How Google delivers codes:TextCallGoogle prompt

Many people outside the US keep a Gmail account tied to a phone number they no longer have. A US number you keep in an app fixes that: Google’s codes reach the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, in any country. This guide shows how to add the number, what Google’s 7-day wait means, and how to make sure you never get locked out. The Google steps come from Google Account Help.

How does Google send verification codes?

Google’s 2-Step Verification codes are 6 digits, sent by text or by voice call depending on the option you choose. Google may also show a Google prompt on a phone where you are signed in, instead of sending a code.

The TripoSIM US number receives Google’s texts in the TripoSIM app, and calls ring there too. TripoSIM tested Google on October 3, 2026.

How do you add your US number to a Google Account?

Google’s path on a computer:

  1. Open your Google Account, then Personal info.
  2. Choose Phone, then your number, then Edit.
  3. Pick United States from the country list and type the 10-digit number.
  4. Enter the code that arrives in the TripoSIM app, then Update number.

To use it for 2-Step Verification, go to Security & sign-in and Turn on 2-Step Verification, or add the number as a 2-Step phone if it is already on.

Why add it a week before you need it?

Google says a newly added phone number may take up to 7 days before it can be used for sensitive actions or as a 2-Step Verification phone. In practice:

  • Add the US number while your current way of signing in still works.
  • Keep the old number or method on the account until the week has passed.
  • Then remove what you no longer have.

Google allows only one recovery phone number per account, so make it a number you will keep.

How do you make sure you never get locked out?

  • Print backup codes. Google gives sets of 10 backup codes, 8 digits each, for when your phone is lost or your number changed.
  • Add a second step. Google lists the Google prompt, passkeys, security keys and authenticator apps alongside text codes.
  • Keep the number. If your TripoSIM plan ends, the number is kept 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan, then released. See number recycling and account security.
  • Recovering an account takes time. Google says recovery without a second step can take 3 to 5 business days. Start from a device and place you usually sign in from.

What if the code does not arrive?

  1. Use the newest code only. If you asked for several, only the last one works.
  2. Check the TripoSIM app is online with notifications allowed. Google says a good internet connection helps.
  3. A sign-in from a new place can stop Google from delivering a code as a text. Google says delivery can also vary by location. Try a device and place you have used before, or use a backup code.
  4. Choose a call instead of a text if Google offers it. It rings in the TripoSIM app.
  5. Still stuck? Contact TripoSIM support about the number.
