Change countries, SIMs and Wi-Fi as often as you like. Your US number stays the same.
Short answer
Digital nomads use a US virtual number as the one number that does not change when they move. The TripoSIM number rings in an app over Wi-Fi or any local SIM or eSIM with data, receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, and has voicemail. It includes 300 minutes a month to the US and Canada. It cannot call 911, so get a local SIM for emergencies.
Why keep one US number while you move?
Your phone number ends up everywhere: bank and payment accounts, app sign-ins, client contracts, family contacts and the services you still use back home. If you rely on a new local SIM in each country, that number changes every few months, and every account that knows the old one falls behind.
A US number in an app does not depend on the SIM in your phone. Swap SIMs at each border, and the TripoSIM number keeps ringing, as long as the app has internet. Contacts, clients and accounts keep one number for you.
How does the setup work?
Think of it as two layers. Data comes from whatever is local: Wi-Fi at your apartment or coworking space, a local SIM, or a travel data eSIM. The number comes from the TripoSIM app, which uses that data. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app.

Most travel eSIMs are data only and do not come with a number. Our guide to eSIMs and US numbers explains the three kinds of product, and the nomad phone setup walks through it step by step.
A verification code, as it arrives. Real app screen, example number.
Do verification codes follow you when you move?
Yes. The codes go to your US number, not to the SIM in your phone, so they arrive in the app wherever you are online. The number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp. TripoSIM tested 22 apps in October 2026; the list gives examples, not a limit. See how to get codes quickly.
Keep the app connected when you request a code, and request it once.
Add an authenticator app as a second sign-in method where an account offers one.
Before a move, sign in to your key accounts once, so you are not doing it for the first time on airport Wi-Fi.
How many minutes does a nomad use?
Calls to you are included up to a fair use of 300 minutes a month. Only calls you make to US and Canadian numbers use your 300 minutes. Three typical ways of living on the move, worked out for a year:
300 min included
Admin calls homeabout 65 min, within the plan
Clients and familyabout 260 min, within the plan
Daily calls homeabout 455 min: 19 extra packs, +$95 a year
Within the included minutesExtra minutes, $5 per 100
Calls out to the US and Canada, by how much you call

One year on the yearly plan

Calls out to the US and Canada1 call a week to a bank, insurer or doctor, 15 minutes: about 65 minutes a month
Extra minutesNone: within the included minutes
One year on the yearly plan$100
Clients and family
Calls out to the US and Canada3 calls a week, 20 minutes each: about 260 minutes a month

Daily calls home
Calls out to the US and Canada7 calls a week, 15 minutes each: about 455 minutes a month
Extra minutes19 × $5 = $95 a year
One year on the yearly plan$195
Incoming calls do not use your minutes (fair use 300 minutes a month). Each plan includes 300 minutes a month out; extra minutes are $5 per 100, and unused extra minutes carry over to the next month, so the year counts the packs for all 12 months together. Prices before tax.
Calls to local numbers in the country you are in go through your local SIM, not the US number. Try your own pattern in the cost calculator.
What happens to calls on travel days?
On a flight, at a border or while you swap SIMs, the app may be offline. Callers then reach voicemail. Messages can be up to 2 minutes, up to 30 a month, kept 30 days. Your time zone changes often, so record a greeting that does not need updating: "I'm based outside the US and return calls within one US business day."
Some countries or networks restrict internet calling. Test a call in and a call out when you arrive, on Wi-Fi and on local data.
Why do you still need a local SIM?
Emergencies: the US number cannot call 911 or any emergency service, in the US or anywhere else. A local SIM with a number covers that.
Local calls: calls out from the US number go to US and Canadian numbers only. Your landlord, taxi or doctor abroad needs a local line.
Data: the app needs internet. A local SIM or eSIM keeps it online away from Wi-Fi.
Which plan fits life on the move?
If you plan to keep the number for a year or more, the yearly plan is $100 and includes $5 of credit for travel eSIM data or extra minutes. The monthly plan is $12.99 if you want to try it first. Keep your payment card up to date. If a plan ends, the number is kept 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan, then released, and every account that uses it loses its contact number.
When is another option better?
You need to text people back: the TripoSIM number receives texts only. A provider with two-way texting suits you better; see providers compared.
You settle in one country: people there will want a local number. Keep the US number for US contacts.
You are often without internet: on boats or remote treks the app cannot ring. Voicemail catches what you miss.
You are moving to the US: a US carrier line gives you two-way texting and 911 once you arrive. Our eSIM guide covers that route.
