A phone number is easy to stop paying for and hard to replace once it is gone, especially when your apps send their codes to it. Here is what happens to a TripoSIM US number when you cancel the renewal or a payment does not go through, how long you have to change your mind, what happens to your money, minutes and voicemail, and how to move your accounts before the number is released.

What happens, step by step?

StageWhat happens to the numberWhat you can do
You turn off renewalNothing yet; it works as normalUse the time to move your accounts
The paid period ends, or a renewal is not paidIt stops working and is pausedRenew to use it again
The holdPaused, not active, and kept for you: 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly)Renew before the hold ends to get it back
After the holdReleasedNothing: it cannot be recovered and may go to someone else

You can turn off renewal in the app anytime. The number keeps working until the end of the period you already paid for. Only then does it pause.

How long is the number kept on each plan?

PlanKept after the plan endsThen
Yearly30 daysReleased, cannot be recovered
Monthly90 daysReleased, cannot be recovered

The monthly plan has the longer hold because numbers are often linked to accounts such as WhatsApp, and it gives you time to come back or move them. If you think you may stop and restart, that is one reason to choose monthly. Monthly or yearly: the break-even month weighs the hold against the price.

Does the number still work during the hold?

Treat it as off. During the hold the number is paused, not active, so do not count on it for calls, texts or one last verification code. It is kept for you, not working for you. If you need it again, renew before the hold ends.

What callers hear while a number is paused is not set out in the plan details we have checked. If it matters to you, check TripoSIM’s plan terms or ask TripoSIM support.

What happens to your minutes, top-ups and voicemail?

WhatWhat happens
Included minutes300 a month; they reset monthly and do not carry over, so unused ones are not paid back
Top-up minutesTop-up minutes are used after your monthly minutes, stay valid while your number is active and carry over when you renew. They are not refundable.
VoicemailMessages are kept 30 days; save the ones you need before you stop
Welcome creditNot stated for a plan that ends; check TripoSIM’s plan terms before you rely on it

The practical rule: do not buy a top-up just before you let a plan go, and save any voicemail you need while the number is still active.

Do you get money back?

Usually not. Payments on both plans are not refunded, including unused time or minutes. There are three exceptions:

  1. A full refund if your ID check fails after you pay.
  2. A full refund if TripoSIM cannot deliver your number within 72 hours.
  3. Any refund your local law requires.

The number starts right after payment and the ID check. Where a cooling-off (withdrawal) right applies, it ends once the number is delivered. So stopping halfway through a yearly plan does not return the rest of the year. The details are in TripoSIM’s refund policy.

What if a renewal payment fails by accident?

A renewal that is not paid ends the plan in the same way as cancelling: the number pauses and the hold starts. To avoid it:

  • Check the card you pay with is still valid on your renewal date, especially if it expires soon.
  • Note your renewal date yourself, so a failed payment does not surprise you.
  • If a payment fails, renew within the hold to get the number back.

Whether TripoSIM retries a failed payment, or sends a reminder first, is not set out in the plan details we have checked. Check TripoSIM’s plan terms for your plan.

Can you take the number to another provider instead?

Do not plan on it. Moving the TripoSIM number to another provider is not something the plan promises, and the plan details do not describe it. If you want to keep the number somewhere else, ask TripoSIM support before you stop paying, and keep the plan active until you have an answer.

How do you avoid losing accounts tied to the number?

Do this while the number is still active, because most accounts send a code to the old number before they let you change it:

  1. List every account that uses the number. Search your password manager and email for it, and check messaging, payment, marketplace and email recovery settings.
  2. Add an authenticator app or a passkey wherever the account offers one, so the phone number is no longer your only way in.
  3. Change the phone number in each account’s security settings, to the number you are keeping.
  4. Move WhatsApp with Change Number while the old number still works. See how to change your number on WhatsApp.
  5. Test one important login with the new method before you cancel anything.
  6. Update public places: your website, email signature, business cards and online profiles.
  7. Tell the people who call you most.
  8. Save the voicemails you need.
  9. Then turn off renewal, and check that it is off.

Do not leave it to the last day. Some services add a waiting period after you change security details. Our number recycling checklist explains the risk in more detail, and keep your old US number or get a new one covers the same choice for a carrier number.

What does this look like in practice?

A made-up example, not a customer result. A consultant in Dubai used a TripoSIM number on the monthly plan for a six-month US project. Her WhatsApp Business, a payment account and the project’s contact page all use it.

Two weeks before the project ends, she moves her WhatsApp Business account to her main number with Change Number, adds an authenticator app to the payment account and changes its phone number, and removes the US number from the contact page. Then she turns off renewal. The number works to the end of the month she paid for, then is kept 90 days. A month later a former client asks to talk again, so she renews inside the hold and has the same number back.

The bottom line

Stopping payment does not end the number at once: it works to the end of the paid period, then it is paused and kept 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan. Renew inside the hold and it is yours again; after it, the number is released for good and can go to someone else. Payments are not refunded except in the three cases above. Move your logins and contacts first, then cancel. Compare both plans and their hold periods on the plans page.
