A second WhatsApp number on one phone is easy to set up today: WhatsApp’s own app can hold two accounts, and the WhatsApp Business app can run alongside it. Every account needs its own phone number, and a US number is a great fit for the second one. Can you have two WhatsApp accounts on one phone?
Yes. WhatsApp’s multiple accounts feature “allows you to have two different accounts on a single mobile device.” It reached iPhone on March 26, 2026, when WhatsApp’s blog announced “Two accounts, one phone – now on iOS”, “just like on Android.”
The rules, from WhatsApp’s help center:
- A maximum of two accounts per app.
- Each account needs a separate phone number. WhatsApp’s multiple numbers page says “It’s not possible to add a second phone number to your account.”
- Secondary accounts can only be created from your primary phone.
- Account switching is not available in the WhatsApp Business app.
- On iOS, some features, such as connecting a payment method, are not yet available on the secondary account.
You still get message and call notifications for the account you are not looking at. You switch accounts to read them.

How do you add a second account in WhatsApp?
These are WhatsApp’s official steps. Update WhatsApp first.
- Android: tap the three dots, then Settings. iPhone: tap Settings.
- Next to your name, tap the plus sign, then Add Account.
- Tap Agree and Continue.
- Select your country and enter the second number in international format. For a US number, pick United States (+1) and type the 10 digits. Tap Continue for a code, or Verify another way to get it by text or phone call.
- Enter the 6-digit code. On a TripoSIM number, it arrives in the TripoSIM app, so keep that app open with internet on.
- Enter a name and tap Next (or Skip and finish the profile later).
To switch on Android, tap the three dots, then Switch accounts. On iPhone, go to Settings, tap the arrow next to your profile and pick the other account. If Add Account fails, WhatsApp suggests restarting the phone, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and updating the app.
Can you use WhatsApp Business as your second account?
Yes. Many people install the WhatsApp Business app next to regular WhatsApp, with a different number for each app. The TripoSIM US number receives the WhatsApp Business code too; TripoSIM tested it on October 18, 2026. Does dual SIM or eSIM give you two WhatsApp numbers?
Only if you register both. WhatsApp’s multiple numbers page says the app “is tied to the phone number you registered with — not to a specific SIM card or SIM slot. If your phone has dual SIM or an eSIM, WhatsApp uses only the number you verified.”
So a dual-SIM phone gives you the second number, and the multiple accounts feature (or the Business app) gives that number its own account. You don’t need a second SIM for a US number, though: the TripoSIM number lives in an app, so a single-SIM phone can still run two accounts.
Do you need a second number for a second device?
No, if you want the same account in two places. Linked devices let you link “up to four devices at a time to your primary phone”: a computer, WhatsApp Web, a tablet or another phone.
To link a second phone, per WhatsApp’s companion phone steps:
- Install WhatsApp on the second phone and tap Agree and continue.
- Tap the three dots, then Link as companion device. A QR code appears.
- On your main phone, go to Linked devices > Link a device (Android: three dots; iPhone: Settings).
- Unlock your main phone, then scan the QR code.
For a computer or tablet, open WhatsApp there and scan its QR code the same way (how to link a device). Two limits: linked devices log out if your main phone is unused for more than 14 days, and WhatsApp disconnects a linked device after 30 days of inactivity.
What should the second number be?
Pick a number you will keep. WhatsApp sends a code to the same number whenever you move to a new phone, and it deletes accounts after 120 days of inactivity, so open the second account regularly.
