With TripoSIM it lives in the TripoSIM app on iPhone or Android, so calls and texts reach you over Wi-Fi or mobile data in almost any country. Q: How much does a US virtual number cost? A: $100 a year (about $8.33 a month) or $12.99 a month. Both plans include 300 minutes a month of calls to the US and Canada, incoming calls, voicemail and texts from US senders. Q: Can I send text messages? A: No. You can receive texts from US and Canadian senders, but sending texts is not included. Verification codes from apps arrive as texts in the app. Q: Does it work with WhatsApp? A: Yes. The number receives the WhatsApp verification code, so you can register WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business on your US number. TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026 and WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026. It is a safe, reliable choice for WhatsApp. Q: Will banks and apps send verification codes to it? A: Yes. The number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including banking and payment apps. TripoSIM tested 22 apps, including PayPal, Wise and Payoneer; the list shows examples, not a limit. Q: Can I call 911? A: No. The number cannot call 911 or any emergency service. Always use a local mobile line for emergencies. Q: Do I need a US SIM card or eSIM? A: No. The number works inside the TripoSIM app next to the SIM you already have. It works over Wi-Fi, a travel data eSIM or a local SIM, although some countries restrict internet calling. It is not a carrier SIM or eSIM phone line. Q: Why do I need to verify my identity? A: TripoSIM requires an identity check for every US number, which it says US rules require. It takes about 2 minutes with a passport or ID card and a selfie, right after payment and before you pick your number. You do not need an SSN or US address. Q: Which countries can I use it from? A: People in almost any country can buy and use it, except sanctioned countries. Some countries restrict internet calling, so check the rules where you are. Q: What happens when I use all 300 minutes? A: Add 100 more outgoing minutes for $5 in the app. Included minutes reset every month on the day you bought the number and do not carry over. For incoming calls above the 300-minute fair use, callers go to voicemail until the reset. Q: Should I choose monthly or yearly? A: If you need the number for 8 months or more, the yearly plan costs less: $100 against $155.88 for 12 monthly payments. For a shorter stay or a trial, monthly is cheaper and keeps your number 90 days after you cancel. Q: What happens if I cancel? A: Turn off renewal in the app anytime. The number works to the end of the period you paid for, then it is paused and kept 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan. After that it is released and cannot be recovered. Q: Can I get a refund? A: Payments are not refunded, including unused time or minutes. The exceptions are a full refund if TripoSIM cannot deliver your number within 72 hours, and any refund your local law requires. Q: Can I choose my area code? A: Yes. You choose a number by US state or area code from the numbers available right after payment, for example New York 212 or 646, Los Angeles 213 or 310, or Miami 305. Availability changes, so a specific number is never guaranteed. Q: What do I need to use it? A: An iPhone or Android phone with the TripoSIM app, an internet connection, a free TripoSIM account and notifications and microphone allowed for the app so calls can ring. Call quality depends on your connection. Q: Is voicemail included? A: Yes. Voicemail is included with messages up to 2 minutes each, up to 30 a month, kept for 30 days. You also get missed-call alerts. Q: What if my phone is offline? A: Calls need an internet connection to ring. If your phone is off or offline, callers can leave voicemail and you see the missed call when you are back online. Q: What is the $5 welcome credit? A: The yearly plan includes $5 you can spend in the TripoSIM app on a travel eSIM, an eSIM top-up or extra US minutes. The monthly plan does not include it. Q: Is the number mine to keep? A: It stays yours while your plan is active and renews. If a renewal is not paid, it is kept for the hold period and then released, and a released number may be given to someone else. Q: Can I call numbers outside the US and Canada? A: No. Outgoing calls go to US and Canadian numbers only. Anyone in any country can still call your US number, at their own carrier's rates. --- # How to Choose a Second US Phone Number: Buyer Checklist URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/best-second-number-checklist/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Check five things: whether it can send texts or only receive them, which countries it calls, whether you can buy it from your country, what happens if you stop paying, and the full-year cost. The TripoSIM number receives texts only, calls the US and Canada, and costs $100 a year. There are hundreds of second-number apps. Most of the differences that matter fit into ten questions. Answer them for each option you are considering and the right choice usually becomes obvious. ## What does the number need to do? Write one sentence before you compare anything. "US clients need to call me." "I need to text my landlord." "I need a code for one account." Each points to a different product. A number that is perfect for one job can be useless for another. ## The ten-question checklist | # | Question | Why it matters | TripoSIM number | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | Can it send texts, or only receive them? | Many app numbers receive only. If anyone expects a reply, this decides it | Receives texts from US and Canadian senders. Sending is not included | | 2 | Which countries can it call, and how many minutes? | "US number" does not mean worldwide calling | 300 minutes a month to the US and Canada. 100 more for $5 | | 3 | Can you buy and use it from your country? | Some services are for US residents only, and some countries restrict internet calling | Buyable from most countries, except sanctioned ones. Check local rules on internet calling | | 4 | Will apps send their verification codes to it? | You need the code to register and log in to your accounts | Yes. It receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp. It is an internet (VoIP) number in an app, not a carrier line | | 5 | Which senders can reach it? | Short codes, toll-free senders and foreign senders behave differently | US and Canadian senders. Texts from other countries usually cannot reach it | | 6 | What does it need to work? | App numbers need internet and the right phone settings | Wi-Fi or mobile data. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app | | 7 | Is there an ID check, and when? | Some services check ID before you pick a number | Photo ID and a selfie, about 2 minutes, before you choose | | 8 | What happens if you stop paying? | A released number can be given to someone else, along with your codes | Held 90 days (monthly) or 30 days (yearly), then released | | 9 | Can you take the number with you if you leave? | Moving a number to another provider is not always possible | Check with TripoSIM before you depend on it | | 10 | What does a full year cost, and what is the refund rule? | Teaser prices and add-ons hide the real cost | $100 a year or $12.99 a month. Not refunded, except non-delivery within 72 hours | A few of these deserve a closer look. **Question 1, texting.** "SMS included" can mean receive only. Ask the provider directly: "Can I reply from the same number?" If the answer is no and you need replies, look elsewhere. Our number-type comparison (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/compare-number-types/) shows which categories include two-way texting. **Question 4, verification codes.** Ask whether apps send their codes to the number. The TripoSIM number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026, and that list shows examples, not a limit. See the verification research (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/) for the list with dates. **Question 8, holds.** This is the one people forget. If a number is released and reassigned, the next owner can receive texts meant for you. Before you let any number go, move your logins. The account security checklist for an expiring number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) walks through it. ## How do you compare the full-year cost? Add up twelve months, plus any extras you will really use. For the TripoSIM number, paying monthly for a year comes to $155.88. The yearly plan is $100, which saves $55.88, about 36%. Yearly also includes a $5 welcome credit. If you need extra minutes twice a year, the yearly total is $110. If you need the number for 7 months or fewer, monthly is cheaper. Run your own figures in the cost calculator (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/cost-calculator/). When you compare other providers, check what the first-month price becomes on renewal, whether minutes or texts cost extra, and whether keeping the same number costs more. ## When is the cheapest option the wrong one? - **Public "receive SMS online" pages.** Anyone can read the inbox. Never use them for an account you care about. - **Free numbers for a long-term account.** If the number is reclaimed after a quiet month, you lose the recovery route. See free and temporary US numbers vs paid (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/free-vs-paid-us-numbers/). - **A personal number for a team.** If several people must answer one line, you need a business phone system with shared lines and routing, not a personal app number. ## Where does the TripoSIM number fit? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number fits when your job is "be reachable on a US number from abroad": US contacts call you, you call the US and Canada, and you receive texts from US senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/). It also receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp. It does not fit when you need to text back, call emergency numbers, or call other countries. If that matches, see the plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). If it does not, the checklist above still works for whatever you choose instead. Three Different Products URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/esim-with-us-phone-number-explained/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Most travel eSIMs are data only and do not include a phone number. Carrier eSIM voice lines include a number but usually need a US address and roam abroad. An app-based number such as the TripoSIM US Virtual Number gives you a +1 number that runs over any data connection, including a travel eSIM. "eSIM with a US number" is one search, but it covers three different products. An eSIM is just a digital SIM card. Whether it comes with a phone number depends on the plan behind it. Here is how to tell them apart. ## What are the three products? | Product | How it connects | US number included? | Texts | Best for | |---|---|---|---|---| | Data-only travel eSIM | Local mobile data network | Usually no | Usually none | Internet on a trip | | US carrier voice eSIM | A US carrier's network and plan | Usually yes | Two-way, on most plans | A full mobile line in the US | | App-based US number, such as TripoSIM | Internet over Wi-Fi or mobile data | Yes | Depends on the app. TripoSIM receives only | A US contact number without a US carrier line | The number-type comparison (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/compare-number-types/) puts these next to Google Voice, free apps and porting an old number. ## Type 1: a travel eSIM with data only A data-only eSIM gets you online in another country. It does not give you a number anyone can call or text. You can still use internet apps, including a virtual number app. A code sent to your home number still goes to your home SIM. If you want those texts while you travel, check your home carrier's roaming terms. ## Type 2: a carrier voice-and-data eSIM A US carrier, or a prepaid brand that runs on a US carrier, can put a full mobile line on your phone's eSIM. That usually means voice, two-way texting and data. It is the closest thing to a traditional US SIM card. The catch is activation. Many plans expect a US address, a specific phone model or a US location when you sign up. A digital SIM does not mean you can sign up from anywhere. Check before you count on it. ## Type 3: an app-based US number over your existing internet This is what the TripoSIM US Virtual Number is. You pick a US number and use it in the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi, a local SIM or a travel eSIM. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. With the TripoSIM number you can: - take calls from anyone who dials your US number - make 300 minutes of calls a month to the US and Canada - receive texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/) - get voicemail when you are offline You cannot send texts from it, and it does not call 911 or other emergency numbers, so keep your local line for that. It is a phone number, not a data plan. ## Can you use it for WhatsApp and app codes? Yes. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, so you can register them on your US number. A data eSIM gives you the internet connection, and the app number gives you the +1 number the code goes to. Our verification research (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/) lists the 22 apps TripoSIM tested, with dates, and our WhatsApp guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/) walks through the setup. Carrier eSIMs have their own limits abroad too. Roaming prices, residency rules, payment methods and activation all depend on the operator. ## Can you use both together? Yes, and it is a common setup. The travel eSIM gives you data. The TripoSIM app uses that data for calls and incoming texts. It works the same over hotel Wi-Fi or your home mobile data. You do not need to buy a TripoSIM travel eSIM to use the US number. Any working internet connection is enough. The yearly plan includes a $5 credit you can spend on a travel eSIM if you want one. ## What should you check before buying any "US eSIM"? 1. Does the plan include a US phone number? Is it a carrier line or an app number? 2. Are incoming and outgoing texts both included, or only one? 3. Do calls go over the mobile network, through an internet app, or not at all? 4. Can you activate it from outside the US? Does it need a US address? 5. What happens to the number if you stop paying, and can you move it later? 6. Can it call emergency services? Never assume a virtual number does. ## Which one suits you? **A short trip to the US.** You mainly need maps, messages and email. Compare data-only travel eSIMs. **Living abroad with US contacts.** You want delivery drivers, recruiters or clients to call a +1 number. An app-based number is usually enough. Our guide to getting a US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/) compares the routes. **Moving to the US.** You will want a carrier line for texting, emergency calls and banks once you arrive. Many people start with an app number before the move and add a carrier line after. If you plan to switch, check first whether you can move the number. The TripoSIM plan does not promise that. Sources: TripoSIM US number: plan details and FAQ (https://triposim.com/us-virtual-number) --- # Free and Temporary US Numbers vs Paid: What You Actually Get URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/free-vs-paid-us-numbers/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Free and temporary US numbers are fine for throwaway sign-ups, but not for accounts you need to keep. Public inbox codes can be read by anyone, and free numbers can be reclaimed. A paid number stays yours while you pay, which is what you need for banking, work and account recovery. "Free US number" is one of the most searched phrases around US numbers, and there are real free options. The catch is not the price. It is who else can see your messages, how long the number stays yours, and whether the service you are signing up for will accept it. Here is what each type actually gives you. ## What are the five types? | Type | Who can read your codes | How long the number is yours | Calls | Good for | |---|---|---|---|---| | Public SMS inbox website | Anyone on the internet | It was never yours | No | Nothing you want to keep | | Free ad-supported app | You | Until it is reclaimed for inactivity | Usually | Casual use, if the service accepts it | | Google Voice (free personal) | You | While you use it; may be reclaimed after 3 months idle | Yes, from the US | People in the US with a US phone | | Per-code rental service | You, for one code | Minutes, for one code | No | One sign-up you will never need to recover | | Paid app number (e.g. TripoSIM) | You | While your plan is active | Yes | Accounts, work and contacts you want to keep | The rest of this guide explains each row. ## Why are public SMS inbox sites risky? These websites list a handful of US numbers and show every text those numbers receive on a public page. That is the whole product. Anyone who opens the page sees the same codes you do, at the same moment. That makes them dangerous for anything real. If you receive a login code there, someone else can use it. If the account later asks you to confirm the number again, you have no way to get that code privately. The same numbers are reused by so many people that none of them is really yours. Use them for nothing you would mind a stranger controlling. In practice, that means almost nothing. ## Do free ad-supported apps work for verification? Free calling and texting apps give you a number of your own, which is better. One limit matters most. **They can be taken back.** TextNow's support centre says "there's no hard-and-fast rule as to how long a number can stay inactive before it's revoked," and that a new number can expire within 24 hours if you don't use it to call or text. Once a number is released, you cannot get that number back. Someone else may get it, along with any codes meant for you. Our guide to number recycling and account security (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) covers what to do before that happens. ## What about Google Voice? Google Voice is free for personal use and works well, inside its rules. Google describes its personal Voice plans as for individual users in the US, with US numbers only. Setup texts a code to a phone you already have. If you live abroad without a US number, that usually rules it out. See Google Voice alternatives outside the US (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/google-voice-outside-usa-alternatives/). Google also says it may reclaim a number if you don't appear to be using it, such as placing calls or sending messages, for 3 months. ## What are per-code rental services? These services rent you a number for a few minutes to receive one code for one named app, then put the number back in the pool. You get no calls, no voicemail and no second code later. That is the problem. Many accounts ask you to confirm your number again when you log in from a new device or reset a password. With a rented number, that later code goes to whoever has the number then. The account is yours until the first security check, and then it isn't. ## What does a paid app number give you? A paid number is yours for as long as you pay. That one fact solves the main weakness of every free option: you can receive a code for the same account next month and next year. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number costs $100 a year or $12.99 a month. It includes 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada, incoming calls, voicemail, and texts from US and Canadian senders. If your plan ends, the number is held for 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly), then released. It receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, so you can register and keep your accounts on it. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026; that list shows examples, not a limit. It is an app-based VoIP number: it cannot send texts and there is no 911 calling. Our verification research (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/) and the guide to a US number for verification codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/) have the list and setup steps. ## Which should you use? - **A throwaway sign-up, like a forum or a one-time coupon:** free is fine. Avoid public inboxes even here if the account holds anything personal. - **You live in the US and have a US phone:** Google Voice is worth trying first. - **An account you need to keep, such as email, payments, work or messaging:** use a number that stays yours. A paid number is cheaper than losing access. - **You need a US number while living abroad:** compare the options in how to get a US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/), then check the two TripoSIM plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). The simple test: if losing this number next month would lock you out of something you care about, don't use a free one. A paid app-based number such as the TripoSIM US Virtual Number can be bought from most countries, with the trade-offs shown in the comparison table. Google Voice is the first answer most people find when they search for a US number. If you live in the US, it is a good one. If you live anywhere else, you usually cannot get through the sign-up. Here is why, and what each alternative actually gives you. ## Why is Google Voice hard to get from abroad? Two rules stop most people. **It is built for US users.** Google's help page for its standalone plans says they "support individual users in the US with a personal Gmail account", and lists the phone number option as US only (Google Voice Help (https://support.google.com/voice/answer/16515632)). **Setup checks a number you already have.** During setup, Google texts a code to your phone to confirm it (Google Voice Help (https://support.google.com/voice/answer/115061)). The Google Voice community guide (https://support.google.com/voice/community-guide/241024325/why-can-t-i-get-a-google-voice-number?hl=en) spells it out: the number must be a mobile number on a US carrier or one of its resale brands. The same guide says consumer numbers are issued only to US residents and that you cannot sign up while outside the USA. So you need a US number, and a US location, to get a US number. Google Workspace accounts are a separate, paid business product with their own country rules. They are not a shortcut for an individual living abroad. If you already had Google Voice before you moved, many people keep using it. Just treat it as a convenience, not as the only route into your bank or email. ## What are the alternatives, by category? We compare categories rather than named competitors, because prices change often and we only publish figures we can source. Checked 28 October 2026. | Option | Sign up from abroad? | Texts | Calls | Typical price | Main catch | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | Google Voice (personal) | Usually no: US users only, needs a US number to verify | Two-way | Free to the US and Canada when calling from the US; listed rates elsewhere | Free personal plan; paid standalone plans also US only | You need a US number to start | | Paid app-based US numbers, such as TripoSIM | Yes, from most countries. Plenty of plans include only one. - **Free apps** and **per-code rentals** look cheap. But if a number can be handed to someone else, anyone who gets it can receive your login codes. Our guide to free and temporary US numbers vs paid (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/free-vs-paid-us-numbers/) goes through the reclaim rules. - **Carrier lines** are the only category above that is a real mobile line with emergency calling. That is also why they are the hardest to get from abroad. For a wider view that also covers porting or parking an old number, see how to get a US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/). ## Where does the TripoSIM number fit? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is an app-based +1 number you can buy from most countries, without a US address or SSN. You pass a 2-minute ID check, pick your number and use it in the app over Wi-Fi or mobile data. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. What you get: - Incoming calls from anyone who dials your US number, with a fair-use allowance of 300 minutes a month. - 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, plus 100 more for $5 if you need them. - Voicemail, kept 30 days. - Texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/), received in the app. The TripoSIM number does not send or reply to texts, cannot call 911 or any emergency number, and does not call countries outside the US and Canada. On verification codes: the TripoSIM number receives codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026, and that list shows examples, not a limit. See how to set up WhatsApp on this number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/). The price is $12.99 a month or $100 a year. Both are on the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). ## When is another option better? Be honest with yourself about the one thing the number must do. - **You need to text people back.** Choose a service that includes two-way texting. The TripoSIM number cannot send texts. - **You are moving to the US.** Add a US carrier line once you arrive, for emergency calling and two-way texting. - **You run a sales or support team.** A business VoIP provider gives you shared lines, queues and team texting that a personal number does not. - **You already have Google Voice.** Keep it. Add a second number only if it solves a problem Google Voice does not. - **You need one code, once, for an account you will never log into again.** Even then, think twice about a rental. If you ever need that account back, you will need that number. ## The short version If you are in the US, start with Google Voice. If you are abroad, it is mostly closed to you. The real choice is between a paid app number, a business VoIP system, or keeping a US carrier line alive. Pick by texting direction and by what happens to the number if you stop paying, not by the headline price. If you want to see where the different number types land side by side, our number-type comparison (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/compare-number-types/) lays them out. URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/how-many-calling-minutes-300/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: 300 outgoing minutes a month is about ten minutes a day, or two half-hour calls a week plus short calls. Incoming calls use a separate fair-use allowance. If you regularly need more, extra minutes cost $5 per 100 in the TripoSIM app. "300 minutes" sounds like a lot or a little depending on who you are. For occasional calls to US clients or family, it is plenty. For someone who spends hours a day on sales calls, it is not. Here is how to work out which you are. ## What does 300 minutes look like in real calls? It is five hours of outgoing calls a month. That could be: - 30 ten-minute calls - 60 five-minute calls - 150 two-minute calls How far it goes also depends on billing. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. So a 61-second call uses two minutes, and a call of 2 minutes 5 seconds uses three. Lots of very short calls burn through minutes faster than the total talk time suggests. ## How do you estimate your own use? Take the calls you make in a normal week, multiply by the average length, then multiply by 4.3 weeks. Add a little for rounding. | Your week | Monthly minutes (before rounding) | Fits in 300? | |---|---|---| | 5 calls of 10 minutes | about 215 | Yes | | 12 calls of 5 minutes | about 258 | Yes, with a small buffer | | 20 calls of 5 minutes | about 430 | No, you need two top-ups | | 30 calls of 5 minutes | about 645 | No, consider a business phone service | If you only call a few people each week, you will rarely hit the limit. Check your current phone bill for a real number. ## Are incoming and outgoing minutes separate? Yes. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number includes 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers. Incoming calls have their own fair-use allowance of 300 minutes a month. They do not touch your outgoing minutes. If you go over the incoming allowance, callers go to voicemail until the next month starts. This matters if you put the number on a busy website. A lot of incoming calls can use up the allowance even if you rarely call out. Outgoing calls go to the US and Canada only. If you need to call other countries, the minutes will not help. Our guide to calling the US and Canada from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/calling-abroad/) covers what is included and what is not. ## How do extra minutes work? You can buy 100 extra outgoing minutes for $5 in the TripoSIM app, on either plan. Top-up minutes are used after your monthly minutes, stay valid while your number is active and carry over when you renew. They are not refundable. In practice, your included monthly minutes are used first and reset each month. Top-up minutes are only used once the monthly ones run out, and anything left over stays with you as long as the number is active. A heavy month does not waste a top-up you bought earlier. Top-ups add calling minutes only. They do not add texting and do not raise the incoming allowance. ## Does the plan fit you? It probably fits if: - you mainly use the US number for occasional calls, not a call center - most of the people you call are in the US or Canada - you have reliable internet and can keep the TripoSIM app able to ring - you need neither outgoing texts nor 911 from this number - voicemail is fine when you are offline If you want to test your own numbers, the cost calculator (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/cost-calculator/) shows the yearly cost with top-ups, and the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) has both prices. ## When is a different service better? If you need thousands of minutes, call queues, several agents on one line, outbound campaigns, text replies or emergency calls, use a service built for that. A personal number is not a business dialer or a contact center. Our guide to US numbers for remote teams (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-remote-teams/) explains when to make that switch. ## The short version 300 minutes is about five hours of outgoing calls, billed in whole minutes. Count your outgoing calls and your incoming calls separately. If you go over now and then, a $5 top-up covers it and does not expire while your number is active. If you go over every month by a lot, a different kind of service is the better fit. Keep a steady Wi-Fi or data connection, and check that Focus, Low Power Mode or a VPN are not blocking calls. Voicemail catches what you miss. You add a US number, someone calls it, and your phone stays silent. Almost always, the number is fine and a phone setting is in the way. This guide explains how a call reaches you, then gives the fixes in the order that solves most problems. For the overall picture, see how the TripoSIM number works (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/how-it-works/). ## How does a call reach the app? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is not on a SIM card. When someone dials it: 1. The phone network routes the call to TripoSIM. 2. TripoSIM sends a push notification to your phone over the internet. 3. Your phone wakes the app, and it rings. 4. If the app cannot be reached, the caller goes to voicemail. So three things must work: your internet connection, the push notification, and the app's permission to ring and use the microphone. Every fix below targets one of those. Texts from US and Canadian senders arrive the same way. ## Are notifications and the microphone allowed? This fixes most silent calls. - **Notifications on.** Allow notifications for the TripoSIM app, including sounds and banners. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. - **Microphone allowed.** Without it, calls may ring but you cannot be heard. - **Signed in.** Open the app and check your number shows on the home screen. Make a test call from another phone after any change. ## What should iPhone users check? On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. Then: - **Open it from the Home Screen icon,** not from a Safari tab. Notifications only work for the Home Screen app. - **Allow notifications when asked.** If you said no, go to Settings, then Notifications, find the TripoSIM app and turn them on. - **Check Focus.** Do Not Disturb, Sleep and Work Focus modes can silence the app. In Settings, then Focus, add the TripoSIM app to the allowed apps for each Focus you use. Apple explains this in its Focus guide (https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/set-up-a-focus-iphd6288a67f/ios). - **Watch Low Power Mode.** It cuts background activity and can delay notifications. Turn it off when you expect calls, or charge before the call. See Apple's Low Power Mode page (https://support.apple.com/en-us/101604). - **Keep iOS up to date.** Web app notifications rely on recent iOS versions. ## What should Android users check? On Android, install the TripoSIM app. Then: - **Turn off battery optimisation for the app.** Go to Settings, then Apps, then the TripoSIM app, then Battery, and choose "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimise". Android puts idle apps to sleep to save power, which Google describes in its Doze guide (https://developer.android.com/training/monitoring-device-state/doze-standby). - **Check the phone maker's own saver.** Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and others add extra battery tools. Look for "sleeping apps", "auto-launch" or "background activity" and allow the TripoSIM app. - **Allow notifications** for the app, including the call notification category. - **Do not swipe the app away** from recent apps if your phone stops it ringing after you do. ## Is your connection good enough? Calls need a steady connection more than a fast one. - **Wi-Fi vs data.** Hotel and café Wi-Fi often drops calls or blocks call traffic. If calls fail on Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data and test again. A local SIM or a travel eSIM for data (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/esim-with-us-phone-number-explained/) works fine. - **Switching networks.** Walking out of Wi-Fi range mid-call can drop it. Stay on one network for long calls. - **Data saver.** Turn off data saver for the app, or it may not get updates in the background. ## Could a VPN be the problem? Yes. A VPN adds a hop between your phone and TripoSIM. It can delay the push notification, so the call stops before your phone rings, and it can break call audio. If calls are unreliable, try with the VPN turned off. We do not recommend using a VPN to get around local rules. ## Does your country restrict internet calling? Some countries block or limit internet calls, and the number may not ring there over local networks even with perfect settings. The rules change, and some only allow licensed apps. Our country table (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/#from-your-country) lists the restrictions we have found a source for; wherever you are, check local rules before you rely on the number for calls. ## What happens to calls you miss? They go to voicemail. Messages can be up to 2 minutes long, up to 30 a month, and are kept 30 days. Record a greeting so callers know they reached you. If you know you will be offline, for example on a flight, voicemail is your safety net. Our voicemail guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-voicemail-guide/) shows how to set it up. Incoming calls have a fair use of 300 minutes a month; above that, callers go to voicemail until your minutes reset. ## A two-minute checklist - Notifications and microphone allowed. - iPhone: opened from the Home Screen icon; app allowed in every Focus; Low Power Mode off when you expect calls. - Android: battery set to "Unrestricted"; maker's saver allows the app. - Steady connection; VPN off when testing. - Voicemail greeting recorded. - Test call from another phone. The number cannot call emergency services, so keep a local mobile line for that. URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/keep-old-us-number-or-new/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Keep your old US number if your bank, government accounts and family know it, at least until every account is moved. You can keep your plan, port to a cheaper prepaid carrier, park the number or port it to a VoIP provider. A new virtual number is simpler, but move two-factor logins to an authenticator app before you leave. Moving abroad forces a decision most people put off: what happens to the US number your bank, doctor and family have had for years? You have five realistic options. The right one depends on how many accounts depend on that number, and how much you want to pay to keep it. ## What are your options? | Option | Keeps your old number | Ongoing cost | Main risk | |---|---|---|---| | Keep your carrier plan | Yes | Full plan plus roaming | Paying for a line you rarely use | | Port to a cheap prepaid US carrier | Yes | Lower plan | Activation from abroad can fail | | Park the number | Yes | Small parking fee | Limited or no texts, depending on service | | Port to a VoIP provider | Yes, where supported | Varies | Not every provider accepts ports | | Start fresh with a new virtual number | No | New number plan | Accounts left on the old number | ## Should you keep your carrier plan? This is the zero-effort option. Nothing changes, every account keeps working, and texts still arrive when you roam. The downside is cost: you keep paying a full monthly plan, and calls, texts and data abroad may cost extra unless your plan includes them. Check your carrier's international terms before you go. If you will be abroad for years, this gets expensive. ## Can you move to a cheaper prepaid carrier? Yes, if you do it carefully. Porting means moving your number from one provider to another. The FCC says you can usually take your number with you, and your old provider cannot refuse to port it, even if you owe money. Simple ports are meant to be processed within one business day. Three rules: 1. **Start the port with the new provider.** Give them your number, account number and port-out PIN from your current carrier. 2. **Do not cancel your old service first.** The FCC warns this can cost you the number. 3. **Do it before you leave.** Activation from abroad can fail, and a failed activation abroad can leave you without either line. Then keep the prepaid plan topped up. If it lapses, the number is lost. ## What does parking a number mean? A parking service holds your number for a small fee so it is not reassigned. Some forward calls or voicemail. Many do not handle texts well, which matters if your bank texts you login codes. Read exactly what the service does with calls and texts before you port to it. Parking suits a number you want to keep, but rarely use. ## Can you port it to a VoIP provider? Sometimes. The FCC notes that ports can move between landline, internet (IP) and mobile providers. Some app-based providers accept ports in. Check two things first: that the provider accepts your number, and that the number will still receive texts from your bank once it moves. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number gives you a new number that you choose at checkout. If you want to bring an existing number instead, ask TripoSIM support before you buy. If you choose it, you get a new US number and keep the old one somewhere else while you switch. ## When is a new number the better choice? Start fresh if few accounts depend on your old number, or if keeping it costs more than it is worth. A new app-based number keeps you reachable by US contacts and lets you receive texts from US senders, without a carrier bill. The TripoSIM number costs $100 a year or $12.99 a month, with 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada, incoming calls and voicemail. It receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp, so you can move your logins to it. It cannot send texts and has no emergency calling. Compare the two plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/), or see how to get a US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/) for all five options side by side. ## What should you do before you leave? Work through this list while the old number still works on your home network: - [ ] **Move two-factor login to an authenticator app.** Do it for email, banking, tax, investment and social accounts. The FTC says an authenticator app or security key is safer than text codes, because text codes can be stolen through a SIM swap. - [ ] **Save backup codes** for every account that offers them, somewhere other than your phone. - [ ] **List every account linked to the number.** Search your password manager and email for the number. - [ ] **Update banks and card issuers** with your new number and foreign address. - [ ] **Tell government, tax and healthcare services**, which often only reach you by phone. - [ ] **Keep the old number active** until every account is moved and tested. Then let it go. - [ ] **Test one login with the new method** before you cancel anything. ## Why not just let the old number lapse? Because numbers get recycled. A cancelled number goes back to the pool and can be given to a stranger, who then receives your password reset texts. That is the risk covered in number recycling and account security (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/). Moving accounts takes an evening. Recovering an account someone else can reset takes much longer. For more on the move itself, read setting up a US number before moving (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-phone-number-before-moving/) and our page for expats living outside the US (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/expats/). Before letting any number go, list every account linked to it, move login and recovery methods, and turn on app-based two-step verification where you can. A second number quietly becomes the key to a lot of accounts: messaging apps, shopping, marketplaces, sometimes a bank. If you stop paying and the number is later given to someone else, that person can receive your login codes. It happens. Here is how to make sure it does not happen to you. ## How long is a number kept after you stop paying? For the TripoSIM US Virtual Number, it depends on the plan: | Plan | Number kept after the plan ends | Then | |---|---|---| | Monthly | 90 days | Released, cannot be recovered | | Yearly | 30 days | Released, cannot be recovered | During the hold the number is paused, so do not count on it to receive one last code. If you want the number back, renew before the hold ends. Compare both plans on the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). Other providers have their own rules. Free apps often reclaim numbers after a short period of inactivity. Our guide to free and temporary US numbers vs paid (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/free-vs-paid-us-numbers/) covers how that works. ## Which accounts use the number? Find them all before you cancel. Look in: - your password manager (search for the number) - messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal - email accounts, as a recovery phone - banking, payment and marketplace apps - two-step verification settings in each account - public places: your website, email signature, business cards and online profiles Clients may keep calling a number for years after you stop using it. Old business cards and listings do not update themselves. ## How do you move recovery methods safely? Do it while the old number still works. Most accounts ask for a code on the old number before they let you change it. 1. Add an authenticator app or a passkey wherever the account offers one. 2. Check your recovery email is current. 3. Change the phone number in the account's security settings. 4. For important accounts, sign out and test recovery with the new details. 5. Tell your contacts and clients the new number. Do not leave this to the last day. Some services add a waiting period after you change security details, or limit how many codes they send. If you are moving abroad and wondering whether to keep a US number at all, read keeping your old US number or getting a new one (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/keep-old-us-number-or-new/). ## Why are public SMS websites risky? A public "receive SMS online" page shows every text to anyone who opens it. That includes one-time codes. Someone else can use your code to get into the account you just set up. A private number is safer. It still needs a strong password, a secure phone and an active plan. And never share a code with anyone who calls or messages claiming to "check your number". No real support team needs it. For the apps TripoSIM tested and how to set them up, see using a US number for verification codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/). ## What should you do before you cancel? - Check that your important accounts no longer list the old number. - Remove the number from public profiles and your website. - Tell the people who call you most. - Save any voicemails you need. On the TripoSIM number, voicemail is kept 30 days. - Cancel, then confirm the renewal is off. If you plan to move to another provider, ask both sides about transferring the number before you announce a switch date. Moving the TripoSIM number to another provider is not something the plan promises. Fixes to Try URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/receive-sms-us-number-abroad/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Your TripoSIM US number receives texts and verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps over the internet. If one is slow, check the sender is in the US or Canada, check the number you entered, keep the app online with notifications on, and wait for the code timer before asking again. Use the voice call option if offered, or contact TripoSIM support. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number receives texts from US and Canadian senders and verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp, PayPal and Google. When a code is slow and the sign-up screen is counting down, the cause is usually easy to find. Work through the fixes below in order. If you want the basics of how texts reach the number first, read how receiving texts on a US number works (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/). ## Is the problem the sender or your phone? Start by testing the number itself. Ask someone in the US or Canada to text your US number. - **Their text arrives:** your number and app are fine. Go to the sender-side checks. - **Their text does not arrive:** check the app and phone settings first. This one test saves a lot of guessing. ## Which fixes should you try first? Try these in order. Each one takes a minute or two. 1. **Check the number you entered.** Use +1, then the area code, then seven digits. No leading zero, no spaces in the wrong place. Pick "United States" in the country list, not your current country. 2. **Open the TripoSIM app.** Make sure you are signed in and the number shows on the home screen. 3. **Check your connection.** Texts arrive over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Open a web page to confirm the connection works. 4. **Wait for the timer.** Request the code once and wait the full countdown before asking again. 5. **Try a voice call.** If the service offers "call me instead", use it. Incoming calls ring in the app. 6. **Contact TripoSIM support** if the code still has not come after these steps. ## What should you check on the sender's side? **The sender is outside the US or Canada.** The TripoSIM US Virtual Number receives texts from US and Canadian senders. Some international services send codes from a sender in another country, and those often cannot reach a US number. Look for a "US" or "North America" option in the app's settings, or use a voice call. **You asked too many times.** Many services pause codes after several requests in a short time. Wait an hour, then try once. **You typed a different number.** A missing +1 or the wrong country in the list sends the code somewhere else. Check the number shown on the sign-up screen. ## Which app and phone settings matter? If even an ordinary text from a friend does not arrive, check these. - **Notifications.** Allow notifications for the TripoSIM app. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. On iPhone, also check that Focus modes are not silencing the app. - **The right app.** On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. Open it from that icon, not a browser tab. - **Battery saving.** On Android, set the TripoSIM app to "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimise" in battery settings. On iPhone, Low Power Mode can delay notifications. Our guide to making the number ring reliably (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/how-virtual-number-works-internet/) covers each setting step by step. - **Your plan.** Check your plan is active. If a plan ends, the number is paused, and texts stop arriving until you renew. Notifications can lag behind the inbox. If a notification does not appear, open the app and check the inbox directly before requesting a new code. ## Which apps send codes to the number? Apps send their verification codes to the number. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026, including WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, Google, PayPal and Wise, and each sent its code. That list shows examples, not a limit. Our guide to using a US number for verification codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/) has the full list and setup steps. Do not use public "free SMS" inbox sites instead. Anyone can read those codes. ## When should you contact support? If a text or code from a US sender does not arrive after you have checked the settings above, contact TripoSIM support. Include the sender or service name, the approximate time with your time zone, and a screenshot of anything shown on screen. Never send the code itself. ## Keep the accounts you rely on safe A number that receives your codes is part of your account security. Keep the plan active for as long as accounts use it. If a plan ends, the number is held 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly), then released. Read how number recycling affects your accounts (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) before you cancel. (https://triposim.com/blog/will-a-virtual-us-number-work-for-bank-and-app-verification-codes) --- # A Second US Number for Freelancers With US Clients URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/second-number-for-freelancers/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Freelancers abroad use a second US number so American clients can call a familiar +1 number instead of an international one. Set a voicemail greeting with your hours, list the number with your time zone, and plan another channel for written replies, because the TripoSIM number cannot send texts. Working from abroad with US clients has a small but real problem. Clients want an easy way to call you, and an international number puts some of them off. You also do not want to hand out your personal number or pay for a full US business phone system. A second US number fixes that, as long as you set it up around what it can and cannot do. ## What changes for your clients? They dial a normal +1 number. Your phone rings in the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, with no US SIM and no second phone. You can put the same number on proposals, your email signature and booking confirmations. Pick an area code your clients will recognise, but do not use it to suggest a US office you do not have. Our area codes guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-area-codes-guide/) helps you choose. ## How do you set it up? 1. Get the TripoSIM US Virtual Number and pass the 2-minute ID check. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. 2. Choose your number from the area codes available. 3. Allow notifications and microphone access so calls ring. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. 4. Record a voicemail greeting with your working hours, time zone and how to reach you in writing. 5. Ask two different people to call you, once with the app open and once with it closed. For written messages, point clients to email or a chat tool. The TripoSIM number can receive texts from US senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/), but you cannot reply from it, so say so up front. Call recording is not included. If you record calls with another tool, get consent and follow the rules where you and your client are. The freelancers page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/freelancers/) shows how other freelancers use a US number day to day. ## How many minutes will you use? The plan includes 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada, and incoming calls with a fair-use allowance of 300 minutes. Extra outgoing minutes are $5 for 100. | Your pattern | Outgoing minutes a month | Enough? | |---|---|---| | A few short callbacks a week | under 100 | Yes | | Five 30-minute client calls a month | about 150 | Yes | | Ten 30-minute client calls a month | about 300 | Right at the limit | | Daily prospecting calls | 500 or more | No, look at a business phone service | Clients calling you does not use your outgoing minutes. For more examples, see whether 300 minutes is enough (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/how-many-calling-minutes-300/). The yearly plan is $100 and the monthly plan is $12.99. If you are likely to keep the number for 8 months or more, yearly is cheaper. The second US number page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/second-us-number/) compares both. ## Is it a business phone system? No. A US contact number does not include shared team inboxes, bulk texting, auto-dialing, call routing, call analytics or an API. If you need a staffed sales line with integrations, use a business phone product built for that. Keep your own rules for recording, outreach and client data. And do not promise clients features that are not part of the plan, such as text replies. ## How do you know it is working? Track a few numbers for the first two or three months: - how many missed calls you return within one working day - how many calls turn into a booked meeting - your outgoing minutes each month - what the number actually costs you each month The goal is not just to have a +1 number. It is to make it easy for clients to reach you, wherever you are working from this month. Paid vs Free vs Carrier URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/second-us-number-total-cost/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: A US virtual number costs $100 a year or $12.99 a month with TripoSIM, which is $155.88 over 12 monthly payments. Free apps cost nothing upfront but can take the number back. Keeping a US carrier plan abroad usually costs the most, because you pay a monthly plan plus roaming or a travel pass. The price on the plan page is only part of the cost. What you actually pay over a year depends on how long you keep the number, how much you call, and what happens if the number is taken away. Here is a straight comparison of the three usual choices. ## What does each option cost over 12 months? | Option | 12-month cost | What drives the cost | Main risk | |---|---|---|---| | Free number app | No fee | Ads, paid add-ons to keep or lock the number, credits for calls | Number reclaimed after inactivity | | TripoSIM, yearly plan | $100 | One payment; extra minutes only if you call over 300 a month | Paid upfront and not refunded | | TripoSIM, monthly plan | $155.88 ($12.99 × 12) | Monthly payments; same minutes and extras | Costs more if you keep it all year | | Keeping a US carrier plan abroad | Monthly plan fee × 12, plus roaming | The plan itself, roaming or international day passes, and any minimum plan the carrier requires | The highest monthly bill; roaming charges add up fast | We do not list carrier or free-app prices, because they change often and differ by plan. Check your own carrier's current plan and roaming charges, then put them next to the TripoSIM figures. ## What do you get for the TripoSIM price? Both plans include the same things: a US number you choose by state or area code, 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, incoming calls with fair use of 300 minutes, voicemail, and texts from US and Canadian senders. The yearly plan adds a $5 welcome credit. Know the limits too. You cannot send or reply to texts, there is no emergency calling, and it is an app-based VoIP number rather than a carrier line. If you need a full US mobile line, a carrier plan does things the app cannot. ## Should you pay monthly or yearly? It comes down to how long you need the number. Up to 7 months, monthly costs less. From month 8, the yearly plan is cheaper. Over a full year, yearly saves $55.88, about 36%. | Months | Monthly total | Yearly plan | |---|---|---| | 3 | $38.97 | $100 | | 6 | $77.94 | $100 | | 8 | $103.92 | $100 | | 12 | $155.88 | $100 | The break-even month explained (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/monthly-vs-annual-break-even/) walks through examples, and the cost calculator (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/cost-calculator/) runs your own numbers. ## What hidden costs should you count? **Top-ups.** If you call more than 300 minutes a month, add 100 minutes for $5. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. A year on the yearly plan with two top-ups comes to $110; on the monthly plan, $165.88. Our guide to how far 300 minutes goes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/how-many-calling-minutes-300/) helps you estimate. **Your internet.** The number works over Wi-Fi or mobile data. If you rely on mobile data abroad, that data plan is part of the cost. **Losing the number.** This is the cost people forget. A number linked to your bank, WhatsApp or clients is worth more than its monthly fee. Free apps can reclaim a number you have not used for a while. With TripoSIM, if a plan ends, the number is kept 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly), then released and not recoverable. Moving every account to a new number takes hours, and some accounts may lock you out in the process. **No refunds.** TripoSIM payments are not refunded, except a full refund if your number is not delivered within 72 hours, or where local law requires. Buy for the time you are sure about. **Carrier roaming.** If you keep a US carrier plan abroad, a single month with heavy data roaming can cost more than a year of an app number. Check whether your carrier charges per day. ## Which option is cheapest for you? - **A short trip or a test:** a free app or a month of the TripoSIM monthly plan. - **A stay of 8 months or more, or a permanent move:** the TripoSIM yearly plan. - **You need to send texts or want a full mobile line:** a US carrier plan, accepting the higher monthly cost. - **You only want to keep your old US number:** read keep your old US number or get a new one (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/keep-old-us-number-or-new/). For a closer look at free and paid numbers, see free vs paid US numbers (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/free-vs-paid-us-numbers/). A Decision Guide URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/should-you-buy-a-us-virtual-number/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Buy a US virtual number if you mainly need US contacts to reach you, want to call the US and Canada, and need texts from US senders while abroad. It also receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp. Skip it if you cannot do without sending texts or calling 911. The decision table below covers each case. Most people who search "should I buy a US number" want one of three things: to be reachable by US contacts, to call the US cheaply, or to pass a verification code. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number does all three. Here is how to tell which one you are. ## What do you actually need the number to do? Find your row. If any row you need says "not a fit", stop there. | Your requirement | Fit with the TripoSIM number | |---|---| | US clients, family or landlords can call a +1 number | Good fit. Calls ring in the app over Wi-Fi or mobile data | | You call US and Canadian numbers from abroad | Good fit. 300 minutes a month included, 100 more for $5 | | You call Europe, Asia or anywhere else | Not a fit. Outgoing calls go to the US and Canada only | | You receive texts from US and Canadian senders | Good fit. Texts arrive in the app | | You receive texts from senders in other countries | Not a fit. Those texts usually cannot reach US numbers | | You need to text people back | Not a fit. Sending and replying to texts is not included | | You want verification codes for WhatsApp, PayPal or other apps | Good fit. It receives codes (OTP SMS) from apps | | You need emergency numbers or a mobile signal without internet | Not a fit. It is not a carrier line, and emergency calls are not supported | | You run a team that shares one line | Not a fit. It is a personal number, not a business phone system | | You live abroad and need a stable US contact for a year or more | Good fit. Take the yearly plan | Two rows trip people up most often. **Texting.** Receiving a text and sending one are separate features. If your landlord, clinic or client expects a text reply, this number will frustrate both of you. Look at our number-type comparison (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/compare-number-types/) for options that include two-way texting. **Verification codes.** The number receives codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026, and that list shows examples, not a limit. Keep the plan active so future codes keep reaching you. The verification research (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/) has the list with dates. ## Does it work where you live? It needs an internet connection, the TripoSIM app and permission to ring. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. Some countries restrict internet calling, and the quality of your call is the quality of your connection. Test calls on your home Wi-Fi and on mobile data before you put the number on a contract or website. If the phone is offline, callers reach voicemail. ## Monthly or yearly: what do the numbers say? The monthly plan is $12.99. The yearly plan is $100, about $8.33 a month. Both include the same number, minutes, voicemail and texts. | Months you need it | Paying monthly | Paying yearly | |---|---|---| | 3 | $38.97 | $100 | | 6 | $77.94 | $100 | | 7 | $90.93 | $100 | | 8 | $103.92 | $100 | | 12 | $155.88 | $100 | For 7 months or fewer, monthly costs less. From month 8, yearly wins. Over a full year, yearly saves $55.88, about 36%. Three rules change the answer: - **Hold period.** If you stop paying, a monthly number is kept 90 days and a yearly number 30 days. After that it is released and cannot be recovered. - **Welcome credit.** Yearly includes $5 for a travel eSIM or extra minutes. - **Refunds.** Payments are not refunded, except if the number is not delivered within 72 hours, or where local law requires. If you are unsure, start monthly, check the number does what you need, then move to yearly. The break-even explainer (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/monthly-vs-annual-break-even/) works through more examples, and the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) has both prices side by side. ## Who should buy it, and who should not? **Buy it if** you are a freelancer abroad with US clients, an expat who wants family and US services to reach you, or someone moving to the US who needs a +1 number on applications before arrival. In each case, the number keeps you reachable and receives the codes for your accounts, including WhatsApp. Our guide for freelancers with US clients (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/freelancers/) shows a working setup. **Skip it if** you need to text back and forth, or you will live in the US and need a full mobile line. For those, a US carrier line is the better tool. **Use both if** you need a stable US contact number abroad and a local line for emergencies at home. Most people who keep a US number long term end up here. ## Before you pay 1. My main use is calls and receiving texts, not getting a code accepted. 2. I am fine that I cannot send or reply to texts from this number. 3. My calls out go to the US and Canada. 4. I tested, or will test, calls on the internet connection I actually use. 5. I can pass a 2-minute ID check with a photo ID and a selfie. 6. I know what happens if I stop paying: the number is held, then released. 7. I keep another line for emergencies and for account recovery. If you ticked all seven, the TripoSIM number is likely a good fit. If you missed one, read the buyer checklist for a second US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/best-second-number-checklist/) or try the fit checker (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/fit-checker/) first. (https://triposim.com/blog/will-a-virtual-us-number-work-for-bank-and-app-verification-codes) --- # How to Choose a US Area Code (With 25 Major City Codes) URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-area-codes-guide/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Choose the area code your callers will recognize: a code from the city where your clients, family or old address are. The code does not change your price, minutes or which apps accept the number. Big cities have several overlay codes, so pick the city first. Specific codes depend on live availability. A US number is +1, a three-digit area code, then seven digits. The area code is the part people notice. A New York client sees 212 and feels at home. A Miami contact sees 305. This guide gives you the codes for 25 major cities, then shows how to pick one and what to avoid. ## What are the area codes for major US cities? Big cities run out of numbers, so regulators add an **overlay**: a new code for the same area. All codes in a row below are local to that city. Codes were checked against NANPA (https://nationalnanpa.com/) and the NANP area code list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_Numbering_Plan_area_codes) in October 2026. | City | Area codes (original first, then overlays) | Time zone | |---|---|---| | New York City (Manhattan) | 212, 646, 332, 917 | ET | | New York City (other boroughs) | 718, 347, 929, 917 | ET | | Los Angeles (central) | 213, 323, 738 | PT | | Chicago | 312, 773, 872 | CT | | Houston | 713, 281, 832, 346, 621 | CT | | Phoenix | 602, 480, 623 | MT (no daylight saving) | | Philadelphia | 215, 267, 445 | ET | | San Antonio | 210, 726 | CT | | San Diego | 619, 858 | PT | | Dallas | 214, 469, 972, 945 | CT | | Fort Worth | 817, 682 | CT | | San Jose | 408, 669 | PT | | Austin | 512, 737 | CT | | Jacksonville | 904, 324 | ET | | Columbus, Ohio | 614, 380 | ET | | Charlotte | 704, 980 | ET | | Indianapolis | 317, 463 | ET | | San Francisco | 415, 628 | PT | | Seattle | 206 | PT | | Denver | 303, 720, 983 | MT | | Washington, DC | 202, 771 | ET | | Boston | 617, 857 | ET | | Nashville | 615, 629 | CT | | Las Vegas | 702, 725 | PT | | Atlanta | 404, 470, 678, 770, 943 | ET | | Miami | 305, 786, 645 | ET | New York appears twice because Manhattan and the other boroughs have different original codes; 917 covers all five. West Los Angeles uses 310 and 424. Phoenix's three codes became one overlay area in 2023. These are reference codes, not stock. Which numbers you can actually pick is only known when you set up. ## How do you choose the right area code? Ask who will call you, then work through these in order. 1. **Your callers' city.** If your clients or family are mostly in one metro, pick that city's code. A familiar code gets answered more often. 2. **Your callers' time zone.** If your clients are spread across the country, pick a code in the time zone where most of them work. People read a 312 number as Central Time and expect you to answer during Chicago hours. 3. **Your own history.** If you lived in a US city, a code from there is easy to explain and easy for old contacts to trust. 4. **A memorable number.** A clean, easy-to-say number can matter more than a famous code. If 212 is not available, 646 or 332 is just as local. Then check what is offered. With the TripoSIM US Virtual Number, you choose by state or area code from live stock after payment and a short ID check. If your first choice is not there, pick an overlay or a nearby city in the same time zone. ## What mistakes should you avoid? **Choosing for verification.** You do not need a special area code for codes. The number receives verification codes from apps, including PayPal and WhatsApp, whatever area code you pick. A 415 number works the same as a 702 one. For setup steps, read using a US number for verification codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/). **Implying a location you do not have.** A New York code is not a New York office. Do not put a local code next to a street address you do not have, or describe it as proof of US residence. "Our US number" is honest. "Our Manhattan office" is not, unless you have one. **Chasing a famous code.** 212 and 310 are in demand. Spending a week waiting for one rarely beats an overlay code your clients will dial just the same. **Ignoring time zones.** A Pacific number with a team that answers on Eastern hours confuses callers. Match the code to the hours you keep. **Assuming the code changes where you can call.** Every TripoSIM number includes 300 minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, whatever the area code. It does not add calling to other countries. **Publishing the number too early.** Wait until your number is active and you have tested a call in and out before you print it on a website or business card. **Changing it later.** Clients, banks and apps keep old numbers on file. Pick a code you are happy to keep for years, and keep the plan active. If a plan ends, the number is held 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly), then released. ## Does the area code change what you pay? No. Callers in the US pay the same to call any US code, and your plan costs the same whichever code you pick. Callers outside North America pay their own provider's rate to dial +1, whatever the area code. ## A quick checklist - Write down who calls you most and where they are. - Pick one or two preferred codes from the table, plus a backup in the same time zone. - Choose from live stock during setup. - Test an incoming and an outgoing call. - Save the number in +1 format everywhere you publish it. Freelancers can find more on presenting a US number to clients in our guide for freelancers (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/freelancers/) and the business contact checklist (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-business-contact-checklist/). Do not invite text replies, because the TripoSIM number cannot send texts, and plan who keeps the number if things change. A US number on your website makes it easier for American customers to reach you. It also annoys them fast if the contact page promises something the number cannot do. Run through this checklist before you put a +1 number in your header, footer and email signature. ## What will the number be used for? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number works well as a contact line for inbound calls and callbacks to US and Canadian customers. It includes: - 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada - incoming calls, with a fair-use allowance of 300 minutes a month - voicemail - texts received from US and Canadian senders It does not send texts or call emergency numbers. It is not for call centers, robocalls or bulk campaigns. If you need queues, several agents, text replies or helpdesk integrations, you need a business phone system. Our page on US numbers for remote teams (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-remote-teams/) explains where that line falls. ## How should you format the contact section? Write the full number in international format: +1 (area code) XXX-XXXX. Label it "US phone" or "Call our US line". Do not suggest you have an office in that area code's city if you do not. If you only answer at certain times, show your hours and time zone next to the number. Sample copy: > Call our US line: +1 (your number). We answer Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Eastern. If we miss you, leave a voicemail and we will call back. For written questions, use the contact form or email below. That last line matters. It stops customers texting questions to a number you cannot reply from. ## How do you make it work for every visitor? - Add a `tel:` link so mobile visitors can tap to call. - Keep an email address or contact form visible as a backup. - Do not add a "24/7 support" badge unless someone really answers at all hours. - If you work across time zones, say which one your hours are in. - Test the number on a few real phones before you publish. ## What about continuity? Customers save your number. Keep it paid for as long as it appears anywhere. If a plan ends, the TripoSIM number is held 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan. After that it is released and can be given to someone else, along with any calls from your old customers. Set a renewal reminder and keep account recovery on a separate method. The account security checklist (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) has the steps. ## What should you test before you publish? - Call the number and check it rings and the audio is clear where you actually work. - Call a US and a Canadian number from the app. - Leave a voicemail and check you can play it back. - Ask someone with a US number to text you. Remember you cannot reply. - Check your hours and time zone on the page. - Check that internet calling is allowed where you use the app. - Make sure customers can reach you another way if your internet or the app fails. ## The short version A US number is a useful business contact if you present it honestly. The best contact pages say who answers, when, what happens if a call is missed, and where to write instead. For freelancers, the freelancer setup guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/second-number-for-freelancers/) covers the voicemail greeting and call budget, and the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) has the prices. If you need shared inboxes, call queues, CRM integration, recording or two-way business texting, a business phone system is the better choice. A small team working with American clients often wants a US number on its website. That does not always mean it needs a contact center. But putting one person's app number in front of a whole support team causes problems fast. Here is how to tell which setup you need. ## Does one number per person work for you? Yes, if each number has one owner who answers it. A consultant, a solo founder, an account manager or an assistant can each have their own US number for callbacks and voicemail. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is built for that. Each person gets 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada, incoming calls with a fair-use allowance of 300 minutes, and voicemail. Everyone needs their own ID check, about 2 minutes with a photo ID and selfie. Give everyone a backup contact route, such as email, for times when their internet drops. ## When do you need a shared line? A sales or support team usually needs some of these: - several people answering one number - routing by time of day or by who is free - queue stats and missed-call reports - call recording with clear rules - CRM integration and role-based access A personal number does not include any of them. When calls must reach whoever is on shift, use a business phone platform. Our fit checker (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/fit-checker/) asks this question directly and says when a personal number is not the right tool. ## What do US callers experience? They dial a regular +1 number. The call rings in the TripoSIM app over the internet, so call quality depends on the connection of whoever is answering. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. An area code makes the number look familiar. It does not prove you have a US office. Put your real time zone and hours in the voicemail greeting rather than trying to look local. For more on contact pages, see putting a US number on your business website (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-business-contact-checklist/). ## How does written contact work? The TripoSIM number does not send texts. It can receive texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/), but nobody can reply from it. If your team needs outbound texting, use a separate messaging service and follow the consent rules for business texting. Keep shared notes about customers in one place, such as a CRM. Protect call logs, and never ask customers to read you a verification code. ## Who owns the number when someone leaves? Decide this on day one. If the number is on the company's website, the company should control the account and pay for it. When someone leaves: 1. Update the voicemail greeting or move the number's duties to someone else. 2. Change any company accounts that use the number for login codes. 3. Keep paying while the number is still published anywhere. If a plan ends, the number is held 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on the monthly plan, then released. The account security checklist (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) covers moving logins before that happens. ## When should you upgrade to a team phone system? Move to a team platform when: - more than one person has to answer the same line - missed calls start going up - people regularly run past their outgoing minutes - you need call analytics - you have promised customers response times that need proper routing Until then, one number per person with a clear voicemail greeting is a sensible, cheap first step. Prices for each number are on the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). The TripoSIM US Virtual Number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including PayPal, Wise, Google and WhatsApp. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026 and each sent its code. That list shows examples, not a limit. Enter the number as +1 and 10 digits, keep the app online, and request the code once. You want a US number to sign up for PayPal, Wise, a US bank, WhatsApp or a work platform. The short answer: the TripoSIM US Virtual Number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, so you can register and log in with it. This guide shows the apps TripoSIM tested, how to get each code quickly, and what to do if one is slow. ## Which apps send codes to the number? Apps send their verification codes to the TripoSIM number. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026, and each one sent its code. The list below shows examples, not a limit: codes from other apps arrive the same way. | Category | Apps TripoSIM tested | |---|---| | Messaging | WhatsApp (October 13, 2026), WhatsApp Business (October 18, 2026), Telegram, Signal | | Social | Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, LinkedIn, Discord | | Accounts | Google, Microsoft, Apple ID, Amazon | | Payments and fintech | PayPal, Wise, Payoneer, Stripe | | Work platforms | Upwork, Fiverr | | Travel | Uber, Airbnb | Apps without a date in brackets were tested on October 3, 2026. Banks are not on the tested list, so there is no test date for them, but their codes reach the number like any other app's. For WhatsApp in detail, see our WhatsApp number page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/). For the full list with dates, see the verification research page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/), or look up one app in the app check (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/). ## How do you set up an app with the number? 1. **Open the TripoSIM app first.** Texts arrive over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so make sure you are online and notifications are allowed. 2. **Pick United States (+1)** in the app you are signing up for, then type the 10-digit number with no leading zero. 3. **Request the code once.** It shows up in the TripoSIM app. Copy it into the other app. 4. **Wait for the timer** before you ask again. Repeated requests make the app slow you down. 5. **Use the voice call option** if the app offers "call me instead". Incoming calls ring in the TripoSIM app. Never share a code with anyone, including support staff. ## What should you do if a code is slow? Work through these in order. 1. **Check the number you typed.** Enter it in +1 format with the area code and no leading zero. 2. **Check the sender is in the US or Canada.** The number receives texts from US and Canadian senders. Codes from senders in other countries often cannot reach it. 3. **Open the TripoSIM app and check your connection.** Make sure notifications are allowed and the app is up to date. 4. **Wait for the full countdown,** then request one more code. 5. **Try the voice call option** if the service offers it. 6. **Contact TripoSIM support** from the app or its contact page (https://triposim.com/contact) if a code still does not come. Our guide to receiving texts abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/receive-sms-us-number-abroad/) goes step by step. ## What does the TripoSIM number not do? Know these limits before you link accounts to it: - **Receive-only texts.** You can receive texts from US and Canadian senders. Sending or replying by text is not included. - **Not a carrier line.** It is an app-based VoIP number in the TripoSIM app, not a US carrier SIM or eSIM. - **Tied to your plan.** If your plan ends, the number is kept 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly), then released. A released number can go to someone else, so keep the plan active while accounts use it. Read how number recycling affects account security (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) before you cancel. ## Is it worth buying for verification? Yes, if you want a US number for your accounts. It receives the codes, and the same number also takes US calls and voicemail. Pick the yearly plan at $100 or the monthly plan at $12.99, and keep it active so every future code reaches you. If you also want to receive texts from US senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/) such as shops and delivery services, the same number covers that. (https://triposim.com/blog/will-a-virtual-us-number-work-for-bank-and-app-verification-codes) --- # How Voicemail Works on a US Virtual Number Abroad URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-voicemail-guide/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: When your app is offline or you do not answer, callers to the TripoSIM US Virtual Number can leave voicemail. Messages can be up to 2 minutes, up to 30 a month, and are kept 30 days. Allow notifications so you see missed calls quickly. A US number is only useful if people can reach you. So what happens when someone calls while you are on a flight, your battery is dead or your data drops? With an app-based number, the answer is voicemail. Here is how it works and how to set it up so you do not miss anything. ## How is an app number different from a SIM? A carrier number rings over the mobile network. A virtual number rings an app over the internet. That is what lets you answer a US call from hotel Wi-Fi or local mobile data anywhere in the world. It also means your internet, your notification settings and your phone's background rules all affect whether the phone rings. With the TripoSIM US Virtual Number, calls reach the app while you are online. If your phone is off, offline or has notifications blocked, the caller goes to voicemail. It is not a replacement for your local line in an emergency. For the full picture of how calls reach the app, see how the TripoSIM number works (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/how-it-works/). ## What are the voicemail limits? | Limit | TripoSIM number | |---|---| | Longest message | 2 minutes | | Messages per month | up to 30 | | How long messages are kept | 30 days | | Incoming call allowance | 300 minutes a month, fair use | When you go over the incoming allowance, callers go straight to voicemail until the next month. What that means in practice: if you expect dozens of callers a day, 30 messages a month will not be enough. If you want clients, family or a landlord to reach you while you travel, it usually is. ## How do you set up your phone so calls ring? 1. Set up the app. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. 2. Allow notifications and microphone access. Without them the app may not ring, or the caller may not hear you. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. 3. Test on both your usual mobile data and Wi-Fi before you share the number. 4. Ask someone to call you three times: with the app open, with it in the background, and with your internet switched off. The last call should go to voicemail. 5. Find the voicemail section and play back the test message before you travel. Our calling abroad page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/calling-abroad/) has more on calling the US and Canada from the app. ## What should you tell callers? Write the number in international format: +1, the area code, then the seven-digit number. You do not have to explain virtual numbers to anyone. Do be honest about when you answer. A sample email signature: > US line: +1 (your area code) XXX-XXXX. I answer calls 9am to 5pm US Eastern. Outside those hours, leave a voicemail and I will call back. Use your own assigned number, never a sample number. If people might text you, add a line saying the number receives texts but you cannot reply by text. The TripoSIM number can receive texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/), but not send them. ## What if a call does not ring? Check in this order: 1. Is your plan active? 2. Is your internet working? Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. 3. Are notifications and microphone access allowed for the app? 4. Is internet calling restricted where you are? If it still does not ring, contact support with the rough time, the country the caller was in and a screenshot of your call log. Never send your password or a verification code in a support request. ## The short version Voicemail makes an app-based US number much more dependable. It does not remove the need for a good connection and the right app settings. Check that 30 messages a month and 300 incoming minutes fit your use, then set up a greeting with your hours. Living abroad and keeping a US number is mostly about planning. Work out what your US contacts need, get the internet side right, and keep a backup. Here is the playbook. ## What do your US contacts need to do? Write down your three most common situations. Do US clients need to call you? Will you call US numbers back? Will family leave voicemails? Do you need texts from US senders, such as delivery updates or codes? Or do people expect you to text them back? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number covers calls both ways with the US and Canada, voicemail and receiving texts. You cannot send texts from it. If people need to text back and forth with you, pick a service that includes two-way texting. If you will need a normal mobile line when you land in the US, plan for a carrier line too. The expats page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/expats/) shows how people living abroad typically set this up. ## Which internet connection should you use? The TripoSIM number runs over the internet. Home Wi-Fi, local mobile data and a travel eSIM all work. You do not need a TripoSIM eSIM to use the number. Every call depends on that connection and on your phone letting the app ring. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. A weak hotel Wi-Fi signal or strict battery settings can mean late ringing or choppy audio. Some countries restrict internet calling. Our country table (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/#from-your-country) lists the restrictions we have found a source for. Wherever you live, check the local rules, then test calls before you promise clients a time to reach you. ## How do you set up the number without losing your old line? 1. Keep your current local line active for everyday use, emergencies and any account that needs a carrier number. 2. Get the TripoSIM number from the official checkout and pass the 2-minute ID check. 3. Pick a number from the US area codes available. 4. Set up the app. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. Allow notifications and the microphone. 5. Save the number in international format: +1 followed by ten digits. An area code helps contacts recognise a region. It does not show where you live or where your business is registered. If you are still deciding whether to keep your existing US number, read keep your US number or get a new one (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/keep-old-us-number-or-new/) first. ## How do you explain the texting limits? The TripoSIM number receives texts from US and Canadian senders. It does not send them. So a US contact or a service can text you a code or a message, but you cannot reply by text. Texts from other countries usually do not reach it. Apps send their verification codes to it, including WhatsApp, so you can register your accounts on the US number. Keep the plan active so future codes keep reaching you. Tell your regular contacts once: "Call or email me. I can read texts on this number but cannot reply." ## What is your fallback plan? - Give important contacts a second way to reach you, such as email, in case the app is offline. - Keep a local mobile line for emergencies. - If the US number is public, renew it on time. A number can be given to someone else after your plan ends. - Keep the number in one place you update: your email signature, client welcome notes and any CRM. - Track which accounts use it. If you ever change provider, check whether you can move the number first. ## What should you check before clients start using it? 1. Calls work on the Wi-Fi and mobile data you expect to use. 2. Notifications arrive when the app is closed. 3. Voicemail messages appear and play back. 4. A test text from a US number arrives. Do not use a real login code for the test. 5. Your local network allows internet calling. 6. Emergency calls stay on your local carrier line. 7. You know your renewal and cancellation dates. 8. Customers can see a second way to reach you. These steps will not make every connection perfect, but they turn "works worldwide" into a plan you can rely on. For a side-by-side look at all the routes to a US number from overseas, see how to get a US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/). Sources: TripoSIM US number: plan details and conditions (https://triposim.com/us-virtual-number); TripoSIM US number: monthly plan (https://triposim.com/us-virtual-number/monthly) --- # Get a US Contact Number Before You Move: A Checklist URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-phone-number-before-moving/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: If you are moving to the US, a virtual US number gives landlords, employers and schools a +1 number to reach you before you arrive. Set it up a few weeks early. After arrival, many people add a US carrier line for texting, 911 and banking, and keep or drop the virtual number. Before you move to the US, you will be talking to landlords, recruiters, universities and service companies. A US number makes all of that easier. But once you arrive, you will probably want a normal mobile line too, for banking, emergencies and texting. Think of a virtual number as the bridge, not the whole plan. ## Who will need to reach you? Make a list: employer, school office, landlord, moving company, host family, relocation contact. For each one, ask: do they just need to call me, or will they expect me to text back? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number handles calls in and out with the US and Canada (300 outgoing minutes a month) and receives texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/). It does not send texts. If someone will only text you, tell them early that email or a call is better. The expats page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/expats/) has more on how people use a US number while their move is in progress. ## How do you set it up while you are still abroad? You need a smartphone, an internet connection and an ID document. No US address or SSN. 1. Choose the monthly or yearly plan. Monthly is cheaper if you only need it for 7 months or fewer. 2. Pass the ID check, about 2 minutes with a photo ID and a selfie. 3. Pick an area code. Many people choose one in the city they are moving to; our US area codes guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-area-codes-guide/) helps. 4. Set up the app. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. 5. Test an incoming and an outgoing call. Keep your current phone line for any verification that needs a carrier number. ## What is your arrival-day plan? Sort out data before you depend on the app. Airport Wi-Fi is unreliable, and the app needs internet to ring. If you buy a travel data eSIM, check it covers the right dates and places. Once you are settled, decide whether you also want a US mobile plan with texting, emergency calls and the number type US banks expect. Most people living in the US end up with one. ## What do you tell landlords or employers? Give them the US number as your callback number. You do not need to explain how it works, and it does not prove you already live in the US. If a form asks for a mobile number, the US number works for calls, and it receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp. Keep an email address on file too, so people can reach you when you are offline. ## When should you switch to a carrier line? Consider a US carrier SIM or eSIM once you need local emergency calling or two-way texting with your landlord. Before you change numbers, update your contacts and the accounts that use the old one. Moving the TripoSIM number to another provider is not something the plan promises, so plan on running both for a while, or on retiring the virtual number cleanly. If you are leaving the US rather than arriving, the question flips: read keep your US number or get a new one (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/keep-old-us-number-or-new/) before you cancel anything. Prices for both plans are on the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). Sources: TripoSIM US number: plan details and conditions (https://triposim.com/us-virtual-number); TripoSIM US number: monthly plan (https://triposim.com/us-virtual-number/monthly) --- # US Virtual Number vs Mobile Number: Key Differences URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-virtual-number-vs-mobile-number/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: A US virtual number is a +1 number delivered through an app over the internet; a mobile number comes with a carrier SIM and cell service. Virtual numbers work abroad cheaply, and the TripoSIM number receives verification codes from apps, but some cannot send texts or call 911. Mobile lines do both but roam abroad. A +1 number looks the same to a caller whether it rings a SIM card, a carrier eSIM or an app on the internet. The difference shows up when a bank asks for a code, someone wants to text you back, or you need to call for help. Here is how to tell what you are buying. ## Is a number the same as a network? No. A phone number is an address for calls and texts. It says nothing about how the service behind it works. A carrier mobile line comes with a network and a plan for calls, texts and usually data. A virtual number routes calls and texts to an app over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Neither is better. They do different jobs. Lookup databases label numbers as mobile, landline or VoIP. So do not judge a number by marketing phrases like "real USA number". Ask what it does: which calls, which texts and which codes it receives. ## How do they compare side by side? | | App-based US virtual number | US carrier mobile line | |---|---|---| | Works abroad | Yes, anywhere with internet | Yes, with roaming charges | | Needs a US address to sign up | Often no | Often yes | | Incoming calls | Yes, over the internet | Yes, over the mobile network | | Outgoing calls | Depends on the plan | Yes | | Receives texts | Depends on the app | Yes | | Sends texts | Depends on the app | Yes | | Emergency calling | Usually not included | Yes | | Verification codes from apps | Yes with TripoSIM, including WhatsApp | Yes | The number-type comparison (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/compare-number-types/) adds Google Voice, free apps, data eSIMs and porting an old number to this table. ## What should you ask any provider? 1. **Incoming calls.** Can people dial the number and reach me? Does it need internet or a mobile signal? 2. **Outgoing calls.** Which countries, and how many minutes? 3. **Incoming texts.** From whom? Ordinary people, app senders, short codes, other countries? 4. **Outgoing texts.** Can I reply? This is the difference people miss most. 5. **Emergency calls.** Can I reach emergency services with my location? Many internet numbers exclude this. Get a written answer to each. A "calls and texts" badge is not an answer. ## Where does the TripoSIM number fit? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is an app-based number, not a US carrier line. It includes: - a US +1 number in the TripoSIM app, over Wi-Fi or mobile data - 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada - incoming calls, with a fair-use allowance of 300 minutes a month - voicemail - texts received from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/) It cannot send texts and cannot call 911 or other emergency numbers. It needs a short ID check before you pick a number. If you need two-way texting, a carrier line is the better match. ## What about verification codes? The TripoSIM number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, so you can register your accounts on it. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026; that list shows examples, not a limit. See the verification research (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/) for the list with dates. Keep the plan active so future codes keep reaching you. ## Which should you choose? - **App-based virtual number:** you want a stable US contact number while living abroad that also receives your app codes, and you need neither to send texts nor to call emergency services from it. - **Carrier mobile SIM or eSIM:** you live in the US, or need ordinary two-way texting and 911. - **Data-only travel eSIM:** you just need internet on a trip and already have a number. Many people end up with two of these working together rather than one that does everything. If you are still unsure, should you buy a US virtual number? (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/should-you-buy-a-us-virtual-number/) walks through the decision. Sources: TripoSIM US number: plan details and conditions (https://triposim.com/us-virtual-number) --- # Best Time to Call US Clients From Europe, India and Dubai URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/best-time-to-call-us-clients/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: The best time to call US clients from Europe is early to mid afternoon your time, when New York is starting its working day. From Dubai, Pakistan or India it is early evening, 5 to 8 p.m. in Dubai. West Coast clients are only reachable late in the evening from the Gulf and India, or early morning from the Philippines. Working days barely overlap with the US from Europe and not at all from the Gulf or Asia. Here are the US time zones, the clock-change dates that catch people out, and the call windows that work from where you are. ## What are the US time zones? The mainland US has four main time zones. The ITU's time-zone notes (https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/sp/T-SP-E.164C-2011-PDF-E.pdf) and NIST (https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/popular-links/daylight-saving-time-dst) give these offsets: | Time zone | Major cities | Winter (standard) | Summer (daylight) | |---|---|---|---| | Eastern (ET) | New York, Washington, Atlanta, Miami | UTC-5 | UTC-4 | | Central (CT) | Chicago, Dallas, Houston | UTC-6 | UTC-5 | | Mountain (MT) | Denver, Salt Lake City; Phoenix | UTC-7 | UTC-6 (Arizona stays UTC-7) | | Pacific (PT) | Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle | UTC-8 | UTC-7 | Alaska and Hawaii are further behind. Arizona and Hawaii do not use daylight saving time, according to NIST (the Navajo Nation in Arizona does). When it is 9 a.m. in Los Angeles it is noon in New York, so a client on each coast gives you very different windows. If you do not know which zone a client is in, the area code is a good clue. Our area code directory (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-area-codes-guide/) lists the state for each one. ## When do US clocks change in 2026 and 2027? This is the trap. The US and Europe both use summer time but switch on different Sundays: | | Clocks go forward | Clocks go back | |---|---|---| | US, 2026 | March 8 | November 1 | | UK and EU, 2026 | March 29 | October 25 | | US, 2027 | March 14 | November 7 | | UK and EU, 2027 | March 28 | October 31 | The US rule is the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November (NIST (https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/popular-links/daylight-saving-time-dst)). The UK and EU switch on the last Sunday in March and October (GOV.UK (https://www.gov.uk/when-do-the-clocks-change), EU Directive 2000/84/EC (https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2000/84/oj/eng)). So for about two to three weeks each spring and one week each autumn, New York is **4 hours** behind London instead of 5. That includes right now: from October 25 to November 1, 2026, 9 a.m. in New York is 1 p.m. in London. Recurring meetings set in one calendar will shift by an hour for the other person during those weeks. The UAE, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Nigeria do not change clocks (ITU (https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/sp/T-SP-E.164C-2011-PDF-E.pdf)). From those countries, US business hours simply arrive an hour later in your evening from early November to mid-March. ## What is the best time to call US clients from Europe, India or Dubai? The tables show US business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in your local time. "US summer" runs from mid-March to early November; "US winter" is the rest of the year. For the UK and Central Europe, the figures assume both sides are on the same kind of time, which is true except for the few weeks above. **Calling New York and the East Coast (ET)** | You are in | New York 9–5 in your time, US summer | New York 9–5 in your time, US winter | Best window for you | |---|---|---|---| | UK | 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. | 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. | 2 – 5 p.m. (3 hours inside your day) | | Central Europe (Germany, France, Spain) | 3 p.m. – 11 p.m. | 3 p.m. – 11 p.m. | 3 – 6 p.m. | | Nigeria | 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. | 3 p.m. – 11 p.m. | 2 – 5 p.m. summer, 3 – 6 p.m. winter | | UAE | 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. | 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. | 5 – 8 p.m. summer, 6 – 9 p.m. winter | | Pakistan | 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. | 7 p.m. – 3 a.m. | 6 – 9 p.m. summer, 7 – 10 p.m. winter | | India | 6:30 p.m. – 2:30 a.m. | 7:30 p.m. – 3:30 a.m. | 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. summer, 7:30 – 10:30 p.m. winter | | Philippines | 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. | 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. | 9 – 11 p.m. summer, 10 p.m. – midnight winter | **Calling Los Angeles and the West Coast (PT)** | You are in | Los Angeles 9–5 in your time, US summer | Los Angeles 9–5 in your time, US winter | Best window for you | |---|---|---|---| | UK | 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. | 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. | 5 – 7 p.m. | | Central Europe | 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. | 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. | 6 – 8 p.m. | | Nigeria | 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. | 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. | 5 – 7 p.m. summer, 6 – 8 p.m. winter | | UAE | 8 p.m. – 4 a.m. | 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. | 8 – 10 p.m. summer, 9 – 11 p.m. winter | | Pakistan | 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. | 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. | 9 – 11 p.m. summer, 10 p.m. – midnight winter | | India | 9:30 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. | 10:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. | 9:30 – 11:30 p.m. summer, 10:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. winter | | Philippines | Midnight – 8 a.m. (next day) | 1 a.m. – 9 a.m. (next day) | 5 – 8 a.m. summer, 6 – 9 a.m. winter (their afternoon) | From the UK, a 2 p.m. call reaches New York at 9 a.m., right as the day starts. From Dubai, 5 p.m. in the US summer is 9 a.m. in New York. The Philippines is the odd one out: your early morning is the US West Coast's afternoon of the previous day, which suits people who start work early. Central time is one hour behind Eastern, so add an hour to the New York figures for Chicago or Dallas clients. ## How do you handle calls outside your working hours? From the Gulf and Asia, US business hours will always cut into your evening. A few habits make that manageable: 1. **Quote times in the client's zone.** Write "10 a.m. ET" or "2 p.m. PT", never just "10 a.m.". Calendar invites that show both zones avoid the clock-change trap. 2. **Batch US calls into one evening block.** Two or three fixed evenings a week is easier to sustain than being reachable every night. 3. **Use the first US hours well.** From Europe, New York's morning is your afternoon. Put calls that need a decision there, because by your evening the US team is in meetings. 4. **Let voicemail take the rest.** Turn on do-not-disturb at night and return calls in your next window. A short greeting that says when you call back sets expectations. ## How does a US number with voicemail help? For a US client, calling a US number is an ordinary domestic call rather than an international one. If you do not want clients calling your personal mobile at 3 a.m. your time, a separate US number gives you an off switch. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number works this way. Incoming calls are included with a fair use of 300 minutes a month. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. When you do not answer, callers can leave a voicemail of up to 2 minutes, up to 30 a month, kept for 30 days. When you return calls, 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers are included, and your client sees a US number. It runs in an app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and texts are receive-only, so it is a calling and voicemail line rather than a full phone plan. You can also choose an area code near your main clients, so the number looks local to them. Our voicemail guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-voicemail-guide/) shows how to set up a greeting for an overseas schedule, and the freelancer page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/freelancers/) covers how people use a US number with clients. For dialling formats, see how to call the US from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/how-to-call-the-us-from-abroad/). ## The bottom line From the UK and Europe, call New York in your early to mid afternoon and the West Coast in your early evening. From Dubai, Pakistan and India, plan evening calls, roughly 5 to 9 p.m. in Dubai depending on the season. From the Philippines, either late evening for the East Coast or early morning for the West Coast. Watch the weeks in March and late October or early November when the US and Europe are out of step. The TripoSIM US number receives WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business codes; TripoSIM tested them on October 13 and October 18, 2026. You keep the number while your plan is active, so WhatsApp can reach you with a new code whenever you change phones. Check ownership, renewal and calls before you pay. If you want to buy a US number for WhatsApp, buy one you keep. WhatsApp sends a new code to the same number every time you move to a new phone, so the number matters for as long as the account exists. The TripoSIM US number is a safe, reliable choice: it receives WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business codes, TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026 and WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026, and the number stays yours while your plan is active. This guide shows what sellers offer, what to check first, and how to set it up. ## What kinds of US number for WhatsApp can you buy? Sellers use different labels, but almost every offer falls into one of four groups. **1. App-based US numbers you keep.** A US number that lives in an app and works over the internet. The TripoSIM US number is one. You keep it as long as you pay, and you receive calls, texts and app codes on it, including WhatsApp. (New to the term? See what a VoIP number is (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/what-is-a-voip-number/).) **2. One-code SMS rentals.** Marketplaces rent you a number for one code, sometimes for a few minutes or days. Whatever the label, you don't own the number, and it goes back into the pool. That leaves you with no way to receive the next WhatsApp code. **3. US carrier lines: prepaid SIM or eSIM.** A mobile line from a US carrier. The trade-offs are cost, keeping the line active from abroad, and the carrier's own rules for inactive lines. **4. Toll-free and business numbers.** 800-style numbers or business lines from a cloud phone provider. These are mostly used with the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), which is for developers and companies, not the phone app. The WhatsApp Business app vs API guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/whatsapp-business-us-number/) covers it. ## How do the four types compare? | | App-based number you keep (TripoSIM) | One-code SMS rental | US carrier SIM or eSIM | Toll-free / business number | |---|---|---|---|---| | Keeps the number long-term? | Yes, while you pay | No | Yes, while the line is active | Yes, while you pay | | Can receive a new WhatsApp code later? | Yes | No, the number is gone | Yes | Mainly on the Cloud API | | Works from abroad? | Yes, over Wi-Fi or mobile data | Only for the rental period | Only with roaming | Depends on provider | | Calls and voicemail too? | Yes | No | Yes | Depends on provider | The pattern is simple. If you need the account in a year, you need a number you still control in a year. ## What should you check before you pay? Ask the seller, or read the terms, for each of these points. 1. **Do you own the number, and for how long?** Look for an ongoing plan, not "valid for 20 minutes". Recovery needs the same number (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1007324800132703/): "It's not possible to recover an account without a SIM card with the same phone number as your account." 2. **What happens if you stop paying?** How many days is the number held before it is released to someone else? 3. **Can it receive a call as well as SMS?** WhatsApp offers a phone call with the code when the text timer runs out. 4. **Is there an ID check?** A provider that checks who gets each number has more control over how its numbers are used. 5. **Has the number been used before?** WhatsApp identifies a recycled number (https://faq.whatsapp.com/3347469605523961/) when an account is unused for 45 days and then reactivated on a new device. A number from a provider that checks ID is a cleaner start than a shared rental pool. 6. **What else do you get?** A number that also gives you US calls, voicemail and codes from other apps is worth more than a WhatsApp-only number. Then plan for the long run. WhatsApp says accounts "are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity" (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/828406668498455/)), so open the app regularly, and keep the number while the account exists. Turn on two-step verification (now a password, since August 2026 (https://blog.whatsapp.com/one-billion-people-are-now-protected-with-passkeys-on-whatsapp-plus-more-account-security-features)) and add a recovery email. ## What red flags should you look for in vendor marketing? - **One-time numbers sold for accounts you keep.** "Stays active just long enough for the code" is fine for a throwaway sign-up. For WhatsApp it means you can't receive the next code after a new phone or a logout. - **Public inbox numbers.** Anyone who visits the page can read your code. - **Advice to use a VPN or a modified WhatsApp app.** WhatsApp says it can act against accounts on unofficial apps (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1217634902127718/). Use the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. ## How does the TripoSIM number check out? **WhatsApp codes.** The number receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026 and WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026, part of 22 apps it tested from October 3 to 18, 2026. **Ownership.** You keep the number while your plan is active. If a plan ends, it is held 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly) before release. **Calls and texts.** It receives calls, so WhatsApp's phone call option works, and it receives texts from US and Canadian senders and from apps. Sending texts is not included. **ID check.** A 2-minute ID check comes before you choose a number. **Price.** $100 a year or $12.99 a month. See the plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). ## How do you set up WhatsApp after you buy? 1. Choose your number by state or area code in the TripoSIM app. 2. Open WhatsApp (or WhatsApp Business), pick United States (+1) and type the 10 digits. 3. Keep the TripoSIM app open with internet on. The 6-digit code arrives as a text in the app. If the timer runs out first, choose the phone call option. 4. Turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email. The full walk-through is in how to set up WhatsApp with a US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/set-up-whatsapp-with-us-number/), and our page on using a US number for WhatsApp (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/) covers the rest. If a code is slow to arrive, see WhatsApp code not received: fixes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/whatsapp-code-not-received/). Thinking of a free number instead? Free US numbers for WhatsApp (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/free-us-number-for-whatsapp/) explains why a number you keep is the better choice. ## Bottom line Buy a US number you keep, not a rental. The TripoSIM US number receives WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business codes, stays yours while your plan is active, and gives you US calls and voicemail on the same +1 number. Pick a plan (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) and register WhatsApp in a few minutes. URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/free-us-number-for-whatsapp/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: A free US number for WhatsApp sometimes receives a code, but it is not safe for an account you want to keep. Public SMS inboxes let anyone read your code, free apps can take numbers back, and rentals expire. Use a US number you keep instead: the TripoSIM US number receives WhatsApp codes and stays yours while your plan is active. A free US number for WhatsApp can get you through the first code, but it doesn't keep the account safe, because someone else controls the number. WhatsApp sends a new code to the same number every time you move phones or log in again. The safe choice is a US number you keep. The TripoSIM US number receives WhatsApp codes, TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026, and the number stays yours while your plan is active. Here is how each free option falls short, and how to set WhatsApp up on a number you keep. ## What kinds of free US number do people try for WhatsApp? There are three, and they fall short in different ways. ### Public SMS inboxes These websites show a list of US numbers and every text those numbers receive, on an open web page. No sign-up, no cost. The problem is in the description: **anyone can read your code.** WhatsApp is clear about what a code means: "If someone is trying to take over your account, they need the SMS verification code sent to your phone number to do so" (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/479314433984258/)). On a public inbox, that code is visible to every visitor. It gets worse after you register. WhatsApp also says that after a number is registered, "anyone who might be using your account is automatically logged out" (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/506595211487528/)). So anyone who later requests a code for the same number and reads it on the same page can register the account on their phone and push you out. ### Free ad-supported apps Free calling and texting apps give you a US number inside an app. You get a private inbox, which is better than a public page. The problem is that **the number may not stay yours.** If the app takes it back, for example after a period without use or when a free plan changes, it can be given to someone else. Burner's own blog says (https://www.burnerapp.com/blog/burner-number-for-whatsapp) that "secondary phone numbers are often recycled" and that "someone may have already set up a WhatsApp account" with a number you receive. ### One-time code rentals Rental marketplaces sell a US number for a single code, often for a few minutes or hours. They are cheap rather than free, but they belong in the same group because the number is not yours for long: one code, then the number moves to the next customer. For WhatsApp, that is the problem. ## Why does the number need to stay yours? The first code is the easy part. What matters is the next one. **You will need a code again.** A new phone, a reinstall or a logout all ask for a fresh code on the same number. WhatsApp's recovery page (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1007324800132703/) says: "It's not possible to recover an account without a SIM card with the same phone number as your account." If the free number has expired or gone to someone else, there is no way back. **Numbers get recycled.** WhatsApp identifies a recycled number (https://faq.whatsapp.com/3347469605523961/) when an account is unused for 45 days and then reactivated on a new device, and it removes the old account data. The new holder of an old free number can start their own account on it. **Inactivity deletes the account.** WhatsApp says "WhatsApp accounts are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity" (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/828406668498455/)). Open WhatsApp regularly, whatever number you use. ## How do the free options compare with a number you keep? | Option | Who can read your codes? | Do you keep the number? | Good for a WhatsApp account you keep? | |---|---|---|---| | Public SMS inbox | Anyone | No | No | | Free app number | You | Only while the app lets you | No | | One-code rental | You, briefly | No | No | | TripoSIM US number | You, in the TripoSIM app | Yes, while your plan is active | Yes | For a wider look at the trade-offs beyond WhatsApp, see free vs paid US numbers (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/free-vs-paid-us-numbers/). ## How do you set up WhatsApp on a US number you keep? 1. **Get the number.** Pick a plan (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) ($100 a year or $12.99 a month), complete the 2-minute ID check, and choose a number by state or area code. 2. **Register WhatsApp.** Choose United States (+1), type the 10 digits, and keep the TripoSIM app open with internet on. The code arrives as a text in the TripoSIM app. If the timer runs out first, choose the phone call option. 3. **Protect the account.** Turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email. 4. **Keep it yours.** Keep the plan active and open WhatsApp regularly. If a plan ends, the number is held 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly) before release. You can also keep your own mobile number on your main WhatsApp and add the US number as a second account. See how to get a second WhatsApp number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/second-whatsapp-number/). Step-by-step help is in how to set up WhatsApp with a US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/set-up-whatsapp-with-us-number/), and the full picture is on using a US number for WhatsApp (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/). Whatever number you use, follow WhatsApp's responsible-use guidance (https://faq.whatsapp.com/361005896189245/): "Only send messages to those who have contacted you first or have requested you contact them on WhatsApp." ## Bottom line A free US number for WhatsApp is a loan, not a number. It might pass the first code, but you can't count on the next one, and that is the code that decides whether you keep the account. Use a US number you keep: the TripoSIM US number receives WhatsApp codes and stays yours while your plan is active. URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/google-voice-paid-plans-2026/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Google Voice paid plans for personal Gmail accounts are Voice Starter at 10 US dollars a month and Voice Standard at 20 US dollars a month, launched in July 2026. They add features such as call recording and auto attendants. They do not open Google Voice to people outside the US: Google says they are for individual users in the US, with US numbers only. Google Voice paid plans are the biggest change to personal Google Voice in years. Until mid-2026, paid Google Voice meant a Google Workspace business subscription. Now an ordinary Gmail account can pay for extra features. If you live abroad, the obvious question is whether paying gets you in. Short version: no. Here is what launched, what it costs and who it is for. ## What launched, and when? 9to5Google reported on July 7, 2026 (https://9to5google.com/2026/07/07/paid-google-voice/) that Google had opened two paid tiers to personal users with no Workspace subscription needed. Google's own help page on standalone Voice plans (https://support.google.com/voice/answer/16515632) describes them as plans you buy "as a Gmail user without a Google Workspace account". You upgrade from the profile menu in the Google Voice app ("Upgrade Voice") or at g.co/voice/upgrade, but Google says the plans cannot be bought through in-app mobile purchase. ## How much do Google Voice paid plans cost? As listed by Google in October 2026: | Plan | Price (as of October 2026) | What it adds | |---|---|---| | Voice (free) | Free | The personal plan Google has offered for years | | Voice Starter (Standalone) | 10 US dollars a month | Three-way calling, call recording, desk phone and ATA support, voicemail transcripts. 9to5Google also lists call transfers and 24/7 support | | Voice Standard (Standalone) | 20 US dollars a month | Everything in Starter, plus auto attendants. 9to5Google also lists call routing and Gemini features | 9to5Google noted a 50% discount on Standard for the first six months at the time of its report; check Google's sign-up page for the current offer. Both plans are for one user. Google also lists calls to 911 for both paid plans on Gmail accounts. What neither plan includes, per Google: numbers outside your home country, ring groups, call queues or automatic call recording. ## Can you get Google Voice outside the US in 2026? Not as a new user. Google's standalone plans page says the plans "support individual users in the US with a personal Gmail account", and lists phone numbers as US only. Google's Workspace help page (https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/voice/about-voice-starter-for-gmail-accounts?hl=en) adds that they are for users in the US who are 18 or older with an @gmail.com address. Google's subscription comparison (https://support.google.com/voice/answer/9249103) says single-user plans, free and paid, are "only available in the US". Google also lists who cannot buy them: - Accounts that are not @gmail.com addresses - Domain-verified Workspace accounts and Workspace Individual subscribers - Anyone under 18 - Anyone with a number port in progress So the paid plans change the features, not the door. If Google Voice did not let you sign up from abroad before July 2026, paying does not change that. Our guide to Google Voice outside the US (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/google-voice-outside-usa-alternatives/) explains the setup barrier and the alternatives in more detail. ## Does anything change for existing users who travel or moved abroad? One thing might. On the free plan, Google says it "reclaims your number if you have no activity" (https://support.google.com/voice/answer/159519?hl=en), after a warning. You then have 45 days to get it back. Making a call, sending a text or listening to voicemail counts as activity. 9to5Google reports that numbers on the paid plans are not reclaimed for inactivity. If you already have a Google Voice number, live mostly outside the US and worry about losing it during a quiet stretch, that is the most relevant change for you. Weigh it against Google's own rule that the plans are for users in the US, and check the terms on the sign-up page before relying on it. Calling rates also depend on location. Google's comparison page says whether a call counts as domestic or regional depends on your primary location, and points to its rates page for international calls. ## Who should pay for Google Voice now? | Your situation | Does a paid plan help? | |---|---| | In the US, need call recording or an auto attendant for a side business | Yes, this is who the plans are built for | | In the US, free Voice works fine | Probably not | | Existing Voice user, often abroad, worried about reclaim | Possibly. Check eligibility first | | Outside the US, no Voice number yet | No. Eligibility is still US users only | ## What can you use instead from abroad? If you cannot sign up for Google Voice, you need a provider that sells to people outside the US. The options fall into a few categories: paid app-based numbers, two-way business VoIP apps, US carrier or MVNO lines, and free or temporary numbers. Our hub on getting a US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/) compares them by country. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is one paid app-based option. It is sold to people in most countries after a short ID check (photo ID and selfie), and here is how it differs from Google Voice: - **Calls:** 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, plus incoming calls in the app. - **Texts:** receive-only, from US and Canadian senders. Sending and replying to texts is not included, which Google Voice does offer. - **No 911:** emergency calling is not included. Keep a local line for emergencies. - **Codes:** receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026. - **Keeping the number:** it stays yours while your plan is active. If a plan ends, the number is held for 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly). If you need to text people back, a two-way provider fits better. If you mainly need to stay reachable on a US number and receive codes, see the TripoSIM plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/), or look up an app you rely on with the app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/). ## Bottom line Google Voice paid plans add useful business features for 10 or 20 US dollars a month, and paid numbers reportedly will not be reclaimed for inactivity. But Google still limits them to users in the US with US numbers. If you are outside the US without a Voice number, the paid plans do not change your options. It is a good fit if you want travel data plus a number for codes. If you need to call US phones or keep a number long term, a standalone US number fits better. Searches for a "Holafly US number" or an "eSIM with US number included" jumped after Holafly started bundling a phone number with its data subscriptions. It is a real feature and useful for some travellers. It is also narrower than the phrase "US number" suggests. Here is what Holafly's own pages say, checked on October 28, 2026, and how it compares with a standalone US number such as the TripoSIM US Virtual Number. ## What does Holafly's included number do? The FAQ on Holafly's plans page (https://esim.holafly.com/plans/) says: "Unlimited Plans purchased on November 4, 2025, or later include a phone number for US, UK, or Canada. Please note that this service supports inbound SMS only and VOIP-based calling (traditional incoming cellular calls are not supported)." Holafly's more detailed help page, How to receive SMS abroad with Holafly Plans (https://esim.holafly.com/faq/about-esims/sms-abroad-with-holafly-plans/), last updated June 11, 2026, adds: - **Which plans:** the Unlimited Plan only, "not eSIMs by days". On the plans page, the Ultra plan, which Holafly describes as "Everything in Unlimited", also lists a local number. The Light plan card does not. - **Which number:** you choose a +1 prefix (US and Canada) or a +44 prefix (UK) in the Holafly app. Holafly says "This choice is permanent." - **Where texts arrive:** "in the Holafly App or your email, never your phone's native message application." - **What is not supported:** "Outgoing SMS and phone calls are not supported." - **Codes:** Holafly says "some banks or services may not send verification codes to non-local numbers." - **Keeping it:** "Don't delete your Holafly eSIM, doing so permanently removes your assigned number." The plans page mentions "VOIP-based calling" while the help page says phone calls are not supported. We could not find more detail on Holafly's site, so treat calling as unconfirmed and ask Holafly if it matters to you. ## How are Holafly Plans billed? Holafly Plans are data subscriptions. According to Holafly's subscription FAQ (https://esim.holafly.com/faq/about-esims/international-data-subscriptions/), monthly plans renew every 30 days and can be cancelled anytime, while annual plans carry a 12-month commitment. When we checked on October 28, 2026, the plans page showed the Unlimited plan at 59.95 euros a month, billed monthly, with quarterly and yearly options at a discount. Prices may differ by currency and location. On cancelling, Holafly says the subscription stays active to the end of the billing cycle, and that "reactivation isn't available yet, so you'll need to purchase a new subscription and receive a new eSIM." Its pages we checked do not say what happens to the assigned number when a subscription ends. If you plan to give that number to a bank, ask Holafly first. ## Holafly number vs a standalone US number The core difference is what you are buying. With Holafly, the number is an extra on a data plan. With a standalone US number, the number is the product, and you bring your own data (Wi-Fi, a local SIM or any eSIM). | | Holafly Unlimited number (per Holafly, Oct 2026) | TripoSIM US Virtual Number | |---|---|---| | What you pay for | A data subscription; the number is included | The number itself: $100 a year or $12.99 a month | | Mobile data | Included | Not included; uses any Wi-Fi or mobile data. Yearly plan adds $5 app credit for travel eSIM data or extra minutes | | Receiving texts | Inbound SMS, delivered to app or email | Texts from US and Canadian senders, in the app | | Sending texts | Not supported | Not included | | Outgoing calls | Holafly's help page says not supported | 300 min/month to US and Canada | | Incoming calls | Help page says not supported; plans page mentions VoIP calling | Yes, ringing in the app, with voicemail | | Choosing the number | +1 or +44 prefix, chosen once | Choose by state or area code after an ID check | | Tied to | Your Holafly eSIM; deleting it removes the number | Your TripoSIM plan, independent of any data plan | | After you stop paying | Not stated on the pages we checked | Held 30 days (yearly) or 90 days (monthly), then released | | 911 | Not mentioned | Not included | Both are internet-based numbers, and neither replaces a US carrier line. The TripoSIM number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp. For more on the difference, see how an eSIM with a US number works (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/esim-with-us-phone-number-explained/). ## When is the Holafly number enough? - You already want an unlimited travel data subscription, and Holafly covers your destinations. - You only need to receive the occasional code or text, and you are fine reading it in an app or email. - You do not need anyone to call you on that number, and you do not need to call US phones. - You are comfortable that the number lives with that Holafly eSIM. In that case, paying separately for a standalone number may be money you do not need to spend. ## When does a standalone US number fit better? - **You need to call US or Canadian phones.** The TripoSIM number includes 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada. See calling the US from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/calling-abroad/). - **You want people to call you.** Calls ring in the TripoSIM app, and missed calls go to voicemail. - **You want a specific area code,** such as a client's city or where your family lives. - **You want the number to outlast a data plan.** You can switch eSIMs, use local SIMs or stay on Wi-Fi without touching the number. - **You want to keep it for years** on a yearly plan, rather than as an add-on to a data subscription. If you need to send texts, neither option fits. Look at a two-way texting service or a US carrier line instead. The TripoSIM number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026, and that list shows examples, not a limit. You can look up a specific service with the app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/), and read more on receiving texts from US senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/). ## Can you use both? Yes. They do different jobs. A Holafly eSIM can carry your data while the TripoSIM app uses that data for calls and texts on your US number. The TripoSIM app needs an internet connection, and any data connection works. ## Bottom line Holafly's included number is a sensible bonus on its Unlimited data plans for receiving texts and codes. By Holafly's own help pages it does not send texts or make calls, and it lives with the eSIM. If you need calls, an area code you choose or a number you keep regardless of your data plan, a standalone number fits better. Compare the TripoSIM plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) or run the fit checker (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/fit-checker/) first. From the UK, India or the UAE that is 00 1 212 555 0123. On a mobile you can type +1 instead of the exit code, which works from any country. Calling the US from another country takes four parts in a fixed order. Get the order right and the call connects from anywhere. Here is the format, the exit code for the country you are calling from, the mistakes that make calls fail, and the cheapest ways to call if you do it often. ## How do you call the US from abroad? Dial these four parts, in this order: 1. **Your country's exit code.** This tells your phone network the call is international. In most countries it is 00. 2. **1.** This is the country code for the US. It is shared with Canada and several Caribbean countries. 3. **The 3-digit area code,** for example 212 for New York or 415 for San Francisco. 4. **The 7-digit local number.** So a New York number written as (212) 555-0123 is dialled from London, Mumbai or Dubai as **00 1 212 555 0123**. On a mobile phone you can skip the exit code and type **+1 212 555 0123** instead. Hold the 0 key to get the + sign. The + stands in for whatever exit code your country uses, so the same saved contact works wherever you are. If you call US numbers often, save them all in +1 format. Every US number is 10 digits after the 1: a 3-digit area code plus a 7-digit number. Area codes and the next three digits never start with 0 or 1, according to the North American Numbering Plan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Numbering_Plan). If you are typing a 0 or a 1 right after the country code, something is wrong. ## What is the exit code from my country? Most countries use 00, which is the prefix the ITU recommends. A few do not. This table uses the ITU's published dialling procedures (https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/sp/T-SP-E.164C-2011-PDF-E.pdf) (position as of December 2011) cross-checked against the current list of international call prefixes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_call_prefixes). | Calling from | Exit code | Example to a New York number | |---|---|---| | United Kingdom | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | Germany | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | France | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | Spain | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | United Arab Emirates | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | Saudi Arabia | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | India | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | Pakistan | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | Philippines | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | Mexico | 00 | 00 1 212 555 0123 | | Nigeria | 009 | 009 1 212 555 0123 | | Kenya | 000 | 000 1 212 555 0123 | | Australia | 0011 | 0011 1 212 555 0123 | | Japan | 010 | 010 1 212 555 0123 | | South Korea | 001 or 002, depending on carrier | 001 1 212 555 0123 | | Brazil | 00 + 2-digit carrier code | 00 41 1 212 555 0123 (via TIM) | | Canada | None, same +1 zone | 1 212 555 0123 | **Brazil** needs one extra step. After 00 you add a two-digit code that picks the long-distance carrier, then 1 and the number. The Brazilian carrier selection code (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Carrier_Selection_Code) list includes 21 for Claro, 15 for Vivo and 41 for TIM. Check which code your own operator supports. On a mobile, dialling +1 avoids the question. **Canada** is inside the same numbering plan as the US, so there is no exit code. You dial 1, the area code and the number, as you would for a long-distance call within Canada. ## What mistakes stop the call from connecting? **Dialling 011.** You will see 011 in a lot of US advice. It is the exit code used *inside* the US and Canada to call other countries. From the UK, India or the UAE it does nothing useful. Use your own exit code or +. **Leaving out the 1.** "00 212 555 0123" sends your call to country code 212, which is Morocco, not New York. The 1 is always needed. **Leaving out the area code.** Americans sometimes give a 7-digit number because the person they usually talk to is local. From abroad you always need all 10 digits. If you only have 7, ask for the area code or check our guide to US area codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-area-codes-guide/). **Adding an extra 1 or 0.** "00 1 1 212..." or "+1 0212..." will fail. After +1 come exactly 10 digits. **Calling a toll-free number.** Numbers starting 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 or 888 are US toll-free numbers. They are generally not accessible from outside the North American Numbering Plan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toll-free_telephone_numbers_in_the_North_American_Numbering_Plan). Many US organisations publish a separate line for overseas callers. The IRS, for example, lists 267-941-1000 for international taxpayers (https://www.irs.gov/help/contact-my-local-office-internationally) and marks it "not toll-free". Look for "calling from outside the US" on the company's contact page. **Calling at 3 a.m. their time.** The US spans several time zones. A call that connects but goes unanswered is still a wasted call. Our post on the best time to call US clients (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/best-time-to-call-us-clients/) has the overlap windows for Europe, the Gulf and Asia. ## What is the cheapest way to call the US from abroad? It depends on how often you call and who you are calling. | Option | Good for | Watch out for | |---|---|---| | Your mobile plan's international rate | An occasional call | Per-minute international charges. Check your carrier's rate before a long call. | | Roaming on a home SIM | Calling while travelling | Roaming rates can be far higher than at home. | | Wi-Fi calling on your own number | Calling from a hotel or office on Wi-Fi | It uses your own plan's prices, so an international call is still billed as one. | | App-to-app calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar) | Friends and family who use the same app | The other person needs the app. Most businesses will not take a client call this way. | | A US number app with included minutes | Regular calls to US clients, banks and offices | Internet needed. Check which countries the minutes cover. | If you call US numbers every week, the last option is usually the one that pays off. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/calling-abroad/) includes 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, and your call shows a US +1 number to the person you are calling. It runs in the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so there is no roaming charge for the call itself. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. If you need more, 100 extra minutes cost $5. Be clear about what it does not do. The TripoSIM number calls US and Canadian numbers only, so it is no help for calls to the UK or India. It needs an internet connection. Emergency calling is not included, so keep a local line for that. And we have no confirmation that it reaches US toll-free numbers, so use the company's international number for those. To see how far 300 minutes go for your own call pattern, read how many minutes 300 a month really is (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/how-many-calling-minutes-300/), or try your numbers in the cost calculator (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/cost-calculator/). ## The bottom line Exit code, 1, area code, number. On a mobile, +1 and the 10-digit number works from every country, which is why it is the format to save in your contacts. Avoid 011, never drop the 1 or the area code, and do not expect US toll-free numbers to work from abroad. If you call the US often, a plan with included US minutes beats paying international rates call by call. Our US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/) hub covers the wider set of options if you also need to receive calls and texts. Your profile, settings, individual and group chats move to the new number. Do it while the old number is still registered, and make a fresh backup afterwards. Changing your phone number does not mean starting WhatsApp from zero. WhatsApp has a built-in feature that moves your whole account to a new number, chats included. The catch is timing: it only works while the old number is still active on your account. Here is how to do it, what your contacts will see, what to do if the old number is already gone, and how to move your account to a US number. ## How do you change your number on WhatsApp? Use the official **Change Number** feature. Check three things first: - Your **new** number can receive SMS or phone calls. - Your **old** number is the one currently registered on WhatsApp on this phone (Settings, then tap your profile photo). - If the new number is a TripoSIM US number, it is active in the TripoSIM app and the app is online. You must do this on your main phone. The option is not available on WhatsApp Web, Desktop or a linked device. Then, on the same phone: 1. Open WhatsApp **Settings > Account > Change number**, then tap **Next**. On iPhone, start from Settings or your profile picture. 2. Enter your old number in the first field and your new number in the second, both in full international format (for a US number, +1 and the 10 digits). 3. Tap **Next**. 4. Choose whether to **notify contacts**: all contacts, only contacts you have chats with, or a custom list. 5. Tap **Done**, then verify your new number with the code WhatsApp sends. That is it. Your account now lives on the new number. ## What moves across and what do contacts see? WhatsApp's About changing phone numbers (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1166321223998129/) page says the change transfers your profile photo, username, display name, privacy settings, WhatsApp contacts, individual chats and group chats. It also deletes the account on the old number, so your contacts stop seeing the old number in WhatsApp. | Who | What happens | |---|---| | Your groups | Notified automatically, whatever you choose for contacts | | Contacts you choose to notify | See that you changed your number | | Contacts you do not notify | Not told. They can still message you in existing chats. | | Blocked contacts | Stay blocked and are not told your new number | | Broadcast list recipients | Only receive your broadcasts if they save the new number | WhatsApp recommends telling people before you switch and asking them to save the new number. For broadcast lists this is essential, because a broadcast only reaches people who have your number saved. One warning from the same page: a change made by mistake **cannot be reverted**. If you move back to the old number, a group admin has to re-invite you. ## How do you keep your chats on a new phone too? If you are changing number and phone at the same time, the order matters: 1. On your **old phone**, change your number first. 2. Still on the old phone, make a **new backup** (Google Account or WhatsApp's own cloud storage on Android, iCloud on iPhone). 3. On the **new phone**, install WhatsApp, register the new number and restore that backup. The reason: cloud backups are linked to the number that created them. Once you change number, a backup made under the old number can no longer be restored. Even if you are staying on the same phone, make a fresh backup straight after the change. You can start one from **Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up**, as described in How to back up your chat history (https://faq.whatsapp.com/481135090640375/). ## What if you have already lost the old number? This is where most people get stuck. Change Number needs the old number to still be registered on your phone. If you do not use Change Number and then lose the old SIM or number, you lose access to that account and have to create a new one. Your options, in order: 1. **Still logged in on the old number?** Do the change now. You may stay logged in for a short time after losing a SIM, which is your window. 2. **Logged out but the number is yours?** Ask your mobile provider for a replacement SIM with the same number, re-register, then change number. WhatsApp's lost or stolen device guide (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1007324800132703/) says an account cannot be recovered without a SIM for that number. 3. **Number gone for good?** Register the new number as a new account. If you have a Google Account backup you may be able to restore some history, but expect to rejoin groups and re-add contacts. Do not leave an old number to lapse while WhatsApp is still on it. Carriers reassign numbers, and the next owner can register WhatsApp with it. Our guide to number recycling and account security (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) explains how to avoid that. ## Can you move WhatsApp to a US virtual number? Yes. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026 and WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026. That makes it a safe, reliable home for your WhatsApp account when you move abroad or want a US number that stays with you. To move your account to it: 1. Buy a plan and finish the short ID check. The number then shows in the TripoSIM app. See the plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). 2. On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. Allow notifications and the microphone so the code and any "Call me" call reach you. 3. In WhatsApp, use **Change number** and enter the US number as the new number: +1 and the 10 digits. 4. Enter the 6-digit code that arrives in the TripoSIM app. If the text hasn't come when the timer ends, tap **Call me**. 5. Make a fresh backup and turn on two-step verification. Keep the plan renewing so the number stays yours. After a plan ends, the number is held 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on monthly, then released. For more on using the number for WhatsApp, read our WhatsApp number page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/). The app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/) shows TripoSIM's results for other apps. ## Why turn on two-step verification before you switch? A number change means a fresh verification, and a fresh verification is when accounts get hijacked. Two-step verification adds a password to your phone number. WhatsApp's steps (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1920866721452534/): 1. Go to **Settings > Account > Two-step verification**. 2. Turn it on and create a strong password. 3. Add an email address you can access, so you can reset the password later. Do this before you change number, and keep the password somewhere safe. You will need it when you register the new number. ## The bottom line Use Change Number, never a fresh install, and do it while the old number still works. Tell your contacts first, let WhatsApp notify your groups, and make a new backup straight away because old backups stay tied to the old number. Turn on two-step verification. If you want your account on a US number, the TripoSIM US number receives the WhatsApp code, so you can move to it with the same Change Number steps. The Break-Even Month Explained URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/monthly-vs-annual-break-even/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Paying $12.99 a month costs less than the $100 yearly plan for up to 7 months. From month 8, monthly costs more: $103.92 against $100. Over a full year, yearly saves $55.88. Monthly still wins for short stays because a cancelled monthly number is kept 90 days. Both TripoSIM US number plans include the same number, the same 300 minutes a month to the US and Canada, the same incoming calls, voicemail and texts from US senders. The only real decisions are how you pay and what happens if you stop. Here is the arithmetic, then the rules that sit around it. ## The arithmetic The monthly plan is $12.99. The yearly plan is $100, paid once, which works out to about $8.33 a month. | Months you need the number | Paying monthly | Paying yearly | |---|---|---| | 1 | $12.99 | $100 | | 3 | $38.97 | $100 | | 6 | $77.94 | $100 | | 7 | $90.93 | $100 | | 8 | $103.92 | $100 | | 12 | $155.88 | $100 | Up to 7 months, monthly costs less in total. From month 8, the yearly plan is cheaper. Over twelve months the difference is $55.88, roughly 36% less on the yearly plan. ## The rules that change the answer **Welcome credit.** The yearly plan includes $5 to spend in the TripoSIM app on a travel eSIM, an eSIM top-up or extra US minutes. If you would buy any of those anyway, it narrows the gap for shorter stays slightly. **How long a cancelled number is kept.** If a monthly plan ends, the number is paused and kept for 90 days. On the yearly plan it is kept for 30 days. After that it is released and cannot be recovered. The longer monthly hold exists because numbers are often linked to accounts such as WhatsApp, and it gives you time to come back or move them. **Refunds.** Payments on both plans are not refunded, including unused time or minutes. The exceptions are a full refund if TripoSIM cannot deliver your number within 72 hours, and any refund your local law requires. So the yearly plan is only cheaper if you are confident you will use it for 8 months or more. **Extra minutes.** If you call more than 300 minutes a month, you can add 100 minutes for $5 on either plan. Top-up minutes stay valid while your number is active. A heavy caller pays the same for extras on both plans, so extras do not change which plan is cheaper. ## Does heavy calling change the math? Not between the plans, but it changes your total. Both plans include 300 minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, and extras cost the same on both. Each outgoing call is rounded up to the next full minute; unanswered calls are free. | Your calling each month | What you pay on top of the plan | |---|---| | Light: about 50 minutes | Nothing. Well inside the allowance. | | Typical client work: about 250 minutes | Nothing, but little buffer for a busy month. | | Heavy: about 430 minutes | Two top-ups of 100 minutes, $5 each, in that month. | Included minutes reset each month and do not carry over. Top-up minutes do: Top-up minutes are used after your monthly minutes, stay valid while your number is active and carry over when you renew. They are not refundable. So a heavy caller over a full year on the yearly plan with two top-ups pays $110, against $165.88 paying monthly. Incoming calls have their own fair use of 300 minutes a month. ## What should you check when comparing another provider? A lower headline price is not always a lower bill. Before you compare, check: - **Is the price per number or per user,** and is it an introductory rate that rises later? - **Is the monthly figure only available with yearly billing?** - **Are taxes or activation fees added at checkout?** - **Does it include texting both ways?** The TripoSIM number receives texts from US and Canadian senders; sending texts is not included. If you need to reply by text, a two-way provider may suit you better even at a higher price. - **What happens to the number if you stop paying,** and for how long is it held? ## Three quick examples **A five-month work project in another country.** Monthly costs $64.95, less than the yearly plan, and you can stop when the project ends. Monthly wins. **A year abroad with a possible early return.** If there is a real chance you will stop before month 8, monthly protects you. If you are confident about the full year, yearly saves $55.88. **A permanent move.** Yearly. You keep the lowest price and the welcome credit, and you can turn off renewal later if your plans change. ## Our suggestion If you are unsure, start monthly for a month or two to confirm the number works the way you need, then switch to yearly once you know you will keep it. Check in the TripoSIM app how a switch is handled for your account before you rely on it. Try your own numbers in the cost calculator (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/cost-calculator/), or compare the plans on the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). A TripoSIM US number works well: it receives WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business codes. A second WhatsApp number on one phone is easy to set up today: WhatsApp's own app can hold two accounts, and the WhatsApp Business app can run alongside it. Every account needs its own phone number, and a US number is a great fit for the second one. The TripoSIM US number receives WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business codes, so you can keep your own number on your main account and add a +1 number for US contacts or work. This guide covers every official method and the steps for each. ## Can you have two WhatsApp accounts on one phone? Yes. WhatsApp's multiple accounts feature (https://faq.whatsapp.com/492167569769444/) "allows you to have two different accounts on a single mobile device." It reached iPhone on **March 26, 2026**, when WhatsApp's blog announced "Two accounts, one phone – now on iOS (https://blog.whatsapp.com/new-feature-roundup-free-up-space-multiple-accounts-cross-platform-transfer-and-more)", "just like on Android." The rules, from WhatsApp's help center: - A **maximum of two accounts** per app. - **Each account needs a separate phone number.** WhatsApp's multiple numbers page (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1068436057886812/) says "It's not possible to add a second phone number to your account." - Secondary accounts can only be created from your **primary** phone. - Account switching is **not available in the WhatsApp Business app**. - On iOS, some features, such as connecting a payment method, are not yet available on the secondary account. You still get message and call notifications for the account you are not looking at. You switch accounts to read them. ## What are all the ways to run a second WhatsApp? | I want to… | Best option | Second number needed? | |---|---|---| | Keep personal and work chats apart in one app | Multiple accounts in WhatsApp | Yes | | Run a business profile with catalog and business tools | WhatsApp Business app alongside WhatsApp | Yes | | Use my two SIMs (dual SIM or eSIM) for two accounts | Multiple accounts, one number per SIM | Yes, the second SIM's number | | Use my one account on a tablet, computer or second phone | Linked devices | No | | Give US clients a US contact number | A second account on a TripoSIM US number | Yes, a US number | ## How do you add a second account in WhatsApp? These are WhatsApp's official steps (https://faq.whatsapp.com/492167569769444/). Update WhatsApp first. 1. **Android:** tap the three dots, then **Settings**. **iPhone:** tap **Settings**. 2. Next to your name, tap the plus sign, then **Add Account**. 3. Tap **Agree and Continue**. 4. Select your country and enter the second number in international format. For a US number, pick United States (+1) and type the 10 digits. Tap **Continue** for a code, or **Verify another way** to get it by text or phone call. 5. Enter the 6-digit code. On a TripoSIM number, it arrives in the TripoSIM app, so keep that app open with internet on. 6. Enter a name and tap **Next** (or **Skip** and finish the profile later). To switch on Android, tap the three dots, then **Switch accounts**. On iPhone, go to **Settings**, tap the arrow next to your profile and pick the other account. If **Add Account** fails, WhatsApp suggests restarting the phone, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and updating the app. ## Can you use WhatsApp Business as your second account? Yes. Many people install the WhatsApp Business app next to regular WhatsApp, with a different number for each app. The TripoSIM US number receives the WhatsApp Business code too; TripoSIM tested it on October 18, 2026. The Business app's registration page (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1344487902959714/) covers the set-up. For profiles, catalogs and when the API makes more sense, see our guide to WhatsApp Business with a US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/whatsapp-business-us-number/). ## Does dual SIM or eSIM give you two WhatsApp numbers? Only if you register both. WhatsApp's multiple numbers page (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1068436057886812/) says the app "is tied to the phone number you registered with — not to a specific SIM card or SIM slot. If your phone has dual SIM or an eSIM, WhatsApp uses only the number you verified." So a dual-SIM phone gives you the second number, and the multiple accounts feature (or the Business app) gives that number its own account. You don't need a second SIM for a US number, though: the TripoSIM number lives in an app, so a single-SIM phone can still run two accounts. ## Do you need a second number for a second device? No, if you want the **same** account in two places. Linked devices (https://faq.whatsapp.com/378279804439436/) let you link "up to four devices at a time to your primary phone": a computer, WhatsApp Web, a tablet or another phone. To link a second phone, per WhatsApp's companion phone steps (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1046791737425017/): 1. Install WhatsApp on the second phone and tap **Agree and continue**. 2. Tap the three dots, then **Link as companion device**. A QR code appears. 3. On your main phone, go to **Linked devices > Link a device** (Android: three dots; iPhone: **Settings**). 4. Unlock your main phone, then scan the QR code. For a computer or tablet, open WhatsApp there and scan its QR code the same way (how to link a device (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1317564962315842/)). Two limits: linked devices log out if your main phone is unused for more than 14 days, and WhatsApp disconnects a linked device after 30 days of inactivity. ## What should the second number be? Pick a number you will keep. WhatsApp sends a code to the same number whenever you move to a new phone, and it deletes accounts after 120 days of inactivity (https://faq.whatsapp.com/828406668498455/), so open the second account regularly. | Second number | Receives the WhatsApp code? | Do you keep it? | |---|---|---| | TripoSIM US number | Yes; TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026 | Yes, while your plan is active | | Second carrier SIM or eSIM | Yes | Yes, while the line is active | | Free or temporary number | Sometimes, once | No, so you can't receive the next code | **The TripoSIM US number.** It receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, and it works over Wi-Fi or mobile data wherever you are. You also get US calls and voicemail on the same +1 number. If a plan ends, the number is held 30 days on yearly or 90 days on monthly before release, so keep the plan active while you use the account. **Temporary numbers.** A number you use once and give up is a trap: you need the same number again to recover the account. Our guide to a free US number for WhatsApp (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/free-us-number-for-whatsapp/) explains why. ## Where does a US number fit? A second account on a US number makes sense for anyone who deals with US contacts from abroad: a freelancer or small business with US clients, a student, or someone who moved away from the US. Keep your own number on your main account, and add a second US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/second-us-number/) for US clients and services, with calls, voicemail and WhatsApp on one +1 number. Ready to set it up? Pick a plan (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/), then follow how to set up WhatsApp with a US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/set-up-whatsapp-with-us-number/). Our page on using a US number for WhatsApp (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/) covers the rest, and the app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/) shows the other apps TripoSIM tested. One rule for any new number: WhatsApp's responsible use guidance (https://faq.whatsapp.com/361005896189245/) says "Only send messages to those who have contacted you first or have requested you contact them on WhatsApp." Give people the number and let them message you first. ## The bottom line For two accounts on one phone, use WhatsApp's built-in multiple accounts feature (two accounts maximum) or add the WhatsApp Business app. Both need a second number. For the same account on more devices, use linked devices and skip the second number. For the second number itself, a TripoSIM US number is a safe, reliable choice: it receives WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business codes and stays yours while your plan is active. If no text arrives, wait for the timer and tap Call me. The TripoSIM US number receives the WhatsApp code in its app. To set up WhatsApp with a US number you need three things: a number you own, a way to receive its SMS or calls, and WhatsApp's 6-digit code. The steps take a few minutes. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, so it is a safe, reliable choice for a US WhatsApp account. This guide follows the registration flow step by step, then shows how to protect the account so you can always get back into it. ## Will WhatsApp send the code to a TripoSIM US number? Yes. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026 and WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026, as part of 22 apps it tested from October 3 to 18, 2026. The code arrives in the TripoSIM app, wherever you are, over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Our page on using a US number for WhatsApp (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/) covers who it suits, and our buyer's guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/buy-us-number-for-whatsapp/) lists what to check before you pay. ## Before you start: what to check Spend five minutes here and registration goes smoothly. - **The number is active on a paid plan.** For the TripoSIM number, that means your ID check is done and the number appears in the app. - **The number's app can ring.** WhatsApp's fallback is a voice call, so the call has to reach you. Test it by calling the number from another phone. - **WhatsApp is up to date**, and call blockers and task killers are off. - **You have a stable internet connection.** Open a web page to check. - **One number per app.** If you also want WhatsApp Business, give it a different number. - **Your two-step verification plan is ready.** Decide on a password and a recovery email now. You will set them up straight after registering. ## How do you register WhatsApp with a US number? 1. Open WhatsApp and tap **Agree and continue**. 2. On Android, tap **Allow** if you want call and message notifications. 3. Select **United States** from the country list and enter your number: +1, then the 10-digit number, with no leading 0 or exit code. On iPhone, tap **Next**. 4. WhatsApp sends a **6-digit code by SMS**. Open the TripoSIM app, where incoming texts show up, and enter the code in WhatsApp. 5. Set up your profile, or restore an existing account if you have a backup. ## What if the SMS code doesn't arrive? Do not keep tapping. Wait for the timer on the screen to finish before you ask again (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/624702592469992/)). Then use the fallback: 1. Tap **Didn't receive a code?** and choose **SMS** or **Phone call**. 2. When the timer runs out, the **Call me** option appears. An automated voice reads out the 6-digit code (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/796575231429493/)). 3. Answer the call in the TripoSIM app. Don't guess the code. Wrong guesses lock you out for a while, and the wait can't be shortened. If nothing arrives, check the TripoSIM app is online with notifications allowed, then work through our fixes for WhatsApp code not received (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/whatsapp-code-not-received/). TripoSIM support at support@triposim.com can also check the number for you. ## What should you do right after setup? ### Turn on two-step verification As of WhatsApp's August 25, 2026 announcement (https://blog.whatsapp.com/one-billion-people-are-now-protected-with-passkeys-on-whatsapp-plus-more-account-security-features), two-step verification uses a password instead of a 6-digit PIN. The steps (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1920866721452534/): 1. Go to **Settings > Account > Two-step verification** (on Android, tap the three dots first). 2. Turn on **two-step verification** and create a password. WhatsApp's password rules (https://faq.whatsapp.com/798764543324146/): at least 8 characters, with at least 1 letter and 1 number. 3. Add an email address you can access and tap **Next**. 4. Choose **Trust this device** or **Skip**. Store the password somewhere safe. You can also add a passkey once your profile is set up. ### Back up your chats Go to **Settings > Chats > Chat backup** and run a backup (how to back up (https://faq.whatsapp.com/481135090640375/)). On Android, backups go to your Google Account or WhatsApp's own cloud storage; on iPhone, to iCloud. ### Keep the number active WhatsApp's lost device page (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1007324800132703/) says: "It's not possible to recover an account without a SIM card with the same phone number as your account." Your number is the key to your account, so keep it. - Keep the TripoSIM plan renewing. After a plan ends, the number is held 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on monthly, then released. - Open WhatsApp regularly. WhatsApp says accounts "are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity (https://faq.whatsapp.com/828406668498455/)." Our guide to number recycling and account security (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) explains why a number you keep matters. ### Message carefully on a new number WhatsApp's responsible use page (https://faq.whatsapp.com/361005896189245/) says to "Only send messages to those who have contacted you first or have requested you contact them on WhatsApp." Give people your new number and let them start the chat. ## Who is a US number for WhatsApp good for? A TripoSIM US number is a good fit for WhatsApp when: - you live or travel outside the US and want a US WhatsApp number that stays the same wherever you are; - you want a second WhatsApp account, or a WhatsApp Business account, on its own number; - you also want US calls, voicemail and texts from US senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/) on the same number. The same number receives codes from other apps too. The app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/) shows TripoSIM's tested list. When you are ready, pick a plan (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). ## The bottom line Setup is quick: enter +1 and your number, type in the SMS code from the TripoSIM app, and use **Call me** if the text hasn't come when the timer ends. The TripoSIM US number receives the WhatsApp code, so it is a safe, reliable choice for WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. Afterwards, set a two-step verification password and email, back up your chats, and keep the number active for as long as you want the account. Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025. Which replacement fits depends on whether you need to send texts, call 911 or just keep a US number reachable from abroad. If you searched for a Skype number alternative, you probably had a US Skype Number that people called you on from home while you lived or travelled somewhere else. That number is gone. This post sets out what Microsoft says happened, what Teams Free can and cannot do, and how to choose a Skype phone number replacement that matches how you actually used it. ## When did Skype shut down? Microsoft announced the move on February 28, 2025 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/blog/2025/02/28/the-next-chapter-moving-from-skype-to-microsoft-teams/) and said new customers would no longer be able to buy paid Skype features such as Skype Credit and calling subscriptions. Its Skype retirement page (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/skype/skype-is-retiring-in-may-2025-what-you-need-to-know-2a7d2501-427f-485e-8be0-2068a9f90472) now reads: "As of May 5th, 2025, Skype is retired." Skype for Business was not affected. You could sign in to Teams Free with your Skype account, and your chats and contacts moved across. Phone numbers did not. ## What happened to Skype Numbers? According to Microsoft's retirement page, checked in October 2026: | Date | What changed for Skype Numbers | |---|---| | April 3, 2025 | Last automatic renewals of Skype Number and calling subscriptions | | May 5, 2025 | Skype retired. Texting (SMS), call forwarding and voicemail on Skype Numbers stopped. Incoming calls continued until the subscription ran out | | December 31, 2025 | Scheduled end for Swedish Skype Numbers | | May 2026 | "All Skype Number subscriptions have ended" | Microsoft also says "Skype Number port-out requests are no longer available." In practice, if you did not move your Skype Number to another provider before it lapsed, those digits cannot be recovered. Your replacement will be a new number. ## What happened to Skype Credit? Microsoft says remaining Skype Credit can still be used for calling through the Skype Dial Pad, which it makes available to remaining paid users on the Skype web portal and inside Teams Free. New credit can no longer be bought, and auto top-up has ended. Calling subscriptions that ran past May 1, 2026 were cancelled and converted into Skype Credit, with a refund available on request. So leftover credit is still useful for making calls out. It does not give you a number people can call back. ## Does Teams Free give you a phone number? No. Microsoft's own wording is: "Microsoft Teams does not support paid calling plans on the free version of Teams." For phone numbers it points small businesses to Teams Essentials with Teams Phone, which is a paid business setup, not a personal replacement for a Skype Number. Teams Free is fine for app-to-app calls and chat with people who also use Teams. For a US number that ordinary phones can reach, you need something else. ## What are the Skype phone number replacement options? Start with what you used the Skype Number for. Most people used it for one or more of three things: being reachable on a US number, receiving texts or codes, and calling US phones cheaply. The options below differ mainly on those three, plus who is allowed to sign up. | Option | Who can sign up | Texts | Calls | Best for | |---|---|---|---|---| | Google Voice (free or paid) | US users only, per Google | Send and receive | In and out | People who are in the US when they sign up | | Paid app-based number, such as the TripoSIM number | Most countries, after an ID check | Receive only, from US and Canadian senders | In, plus 300 min/month out to US and Canada | Staying reachable on a US number from abroad, and app codes | | Two-way business VoIP app | Varies by provider | Usually send and receive | In and out | Texting clients or customers | | US carrier or MVNO line (SIM or eSIM) | Usually needs US address and payment | Send and receive | In and out, with 911 | Living in the US full time, texting both ways and 911 | | Leftover Skype Credit | Existing Skype users | None | Out only | Using up your balance | Google's standalone Voice plans page (https://support.google.com/voice/answer/16515632) says they support "individual users in the US", and its numbers are US-only. If you are already abroad, our guide to Google Voice outside the US (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/google-voice-outside-usa-alternatives/) explains why that is usually a dead end. Free and temporary numbers are another option people try, with real downsides for any account you need to keep; see free vs paid US numbers (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/free-vs-paid-us-numbers/). ## Where does the TripoSIM number fit? The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is closest to how most people used a Skype Number from abroad: a US number in an app, on your phone, over Wi-Fi or mobile data. **Where it fits:** - You want family, clients or US offices to reach you on a US number while you live elsewhere. Calls ring in the app on iPhone or Android. - You want to call US and Canadian phones. Plans include 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada, and you can add 100 minutes for $5. - You want to receive texts from US and Canadian senders and verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026. - You want voicemail. Messages up to 2 minutes are kept for 30 days. - You want to choose the area code. You pick a number by state or area code after payment and a short ID check. **Where it does not fit:** - **Sending texts.** Sending and replying to texts is not included. If you texted from Skype, a two-way service suits you better. - **No 911.** Emergency calling is not included. Keep a local mobile line for emergencies. - **Keeping your old Skype digits.** No provider can do that now that Microsoft has stopped port-outs. - **Calling outside the US and Canada.** Outgoing minutes cover US and Canadian numbers only. You can see the trade-offs side by side on compare number types (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/compare-number-types/), or read how the US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/) options stack up by country. ## What should you do now? 1. **Use up Skype Credit** through the Skype Dial Pad if you still have a balance and need to call phones. 2. **List where your old Skype Number was used:** bank and app logins, business cards, email signatures, family contacts. 3. **Choose a replacement** by the table above. If you need to send texts or call 911, choose a two-way service or a carrier line. 4. **Move important logins to an authenticator app** where the service allows it, so a number change does not lock you out. 5. **Tell people your new number** and update each account one by one. ## Bottom line Skype is gone, Skype Numbers have ended and Teams Free will not give you a phone number. If you mainly need to stay reachable on a US number from abroad, take calls and receive codes, the TripoSIM number is a close match; see the plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). If texting back or emergency calling matters, pick a two-way provider or a carrier line instead. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. The list shows examples with test dates, not a limit on which apps you can use. When we rechecked TripoSIM's published product page while preparing this site, its list of apps that sent verification codes to TripoSIM US numbers had grown. Earlier material referred to 21 apps; the live list now shows 22, after WhatsApp Business was added with a test date of October 18, 2026. Here is what is on the list and how to use it. ## What is on the list? TripoSIM groups the results under "worked in our tests". Most entries carry a test date of October 3, 2026; WhatsApp is dated October 13, 2026 and WhatsApp Business October 18, 2026. - **Messaging:** WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, Telegram, Signal, Discord - **Social:** Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, LinkedIn - **Accounts and platforms:** Google, Microsoft, Apple ID, Amazon - **Money and payments:** PayPal, Wise, Payoneer, Stripe - **Work and services:** Upwork, Fiverr, Uber, Airbnb The full table with dates is on our verification research page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/), which reads from the same data as this post. ## What does the list show? Each entry means that, on the stated date, the service sent its verification code to a TripoSIM US number. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, and the list puts a date on 22 of them. It covers the services people abroad need most: messaging, social accounts, payment accounts and freelance platforms. ## Is the list a limit on which apps work? No. The list gives examples with test dates. The number receives codes from apps that are not on it too. If your app is missing, it simply means TripoSIM has not published a dated test for it. The app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/) shows the test date for each app on the list and covers other services as well. ## How do you use the list? 1. **For WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business**, the number is a safe, reliable choice. Follow our WhatsApp setup guide (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/set-up-whatsapp-with-us-number/) to register in a few minutes. 2. **For money and work accounts**, such as PayPal, Wise, Payoneer, Upwork and Fiverr, add the US number in the account's security or phone settings and enter the code that arrives in the TripoSIM app. Our guide to using a US number for PayPal, Wise and bank verification (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/) goes through each type of service. 3. **For every account**, keep the plan renewing. Your number is how you sign back in, so it should stay yours. Request a code once and give it a minute to arrive before asking again; repeated requests only add waiting time. ## What happens when TripoSIM tests more apps? When TripoSIM publishes new test results, we add them to our research page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/verification-research/) with their dates. To get a number now, see the plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). (https://triposim.com/blog/will-a-virtual-us-number-work-for-bank-and-app-verification-codes) --- # US Phone Number for PayPal From Abroad: What Works URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/us-number-for-paypal-from-abroad/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: Yes. You can add the TripoSIM US number to PayPal from abroad and confirm it with the code PayPal gives you in a text or a call. The number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, and PayPal sent its code to it in TripoSIM's test on October 3, 2026. Add a passkey or authenticator app as an extra login step. Searching "US phone number for PayPal" usually means one of two things. Your US PayPal account still has a number you no longer use, or a login or check is asking for a code you can't receive abroad. A TripoSIM US number solves both: it receives PayPal's code in the app wherever you have internet. This post covers how to add it, what PayPal's help pages say about phone numbers, and how to set up a second login step. ## What does PayPal say about adding and confirming a phone number? PayPal's help pages, checked in October 2026, describe a simple flow: 1. Go to **Settings**, then the **Phone Numbers** section, and choose **Add New** (PayPal Help (https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/how-do-i-add-and-confirm-change-or-remove-a-phone-number-on-my-paypal-account-help265)). 2. Enter the number and choose its phone type (PayPal Help: confirm my phone number (https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/how-do-i-confirm-my-phone-number-help266)). 3. Choose whether PayPal should text you a code or call you. 4. Enter the code and confirm. PayPal says the code "expires in 15 minutes from the time it's issued". 5. Optionally set the number as your primary number. Two details matter if you live abroad. First, you can only remove a phone number if you have at least two on the account. Add and confirm the new number before you try to remove the old one. Second, PayPal offers a call as well as a text, which helps if a text does not arrive. ## Will a US virtual number work for PayPal? Yes, the TripoSIM number does. It receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, and PayPal sent its code to a TripoSIM US number in TripoSIM's test on October 3, 2026, one of 22 apps TripoSIM tested from October 3 to 18, 2026. The number lives in the TripoSIM app and works over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so PayPal's text reaches you abroad, and PayPal's call option rings in the app too. You can look up other apps in our app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/). For PayPal, Wise and banks together, see the guide to verification codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/), and for the number type, our explainer on what a VoIP number is (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/what-is-a-voip-number/). ## Can I keep a US PayPal account if I live abroad? Check this before you worry about the phone number. PayPal's help center says "you can't change your address to a country that is different from the country you used when you opened your account", and "If you're moving abroad, you'll need to close your existing account and open a new account" (PayPal Help (https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/can-i-change-the-address-on-my-paypal-account-to-another-country-help210)). It also says you can have two PayPal accounts, only one of them a business account, if you keep homes in two countries. So a US number does not turn PayPal into a US account. If you have moved for good, follow PayPal's process for your new country and use a mobile number from there. If you still keep a US home and are abroad for a while, a reachable US number helps you keep the account's contact details working. ## How do I add a second login step? PayPal offers login steps that do not depend on texts. Add one next to your phone number: 1. **Create a passkey.** PayPal says a passkey lets you log in "using the same biometrics, PIN, or password you use to unlock your device". It lists supported devices, such as iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later, and says passkeys are available for eligible accounts (PayPal Help: passkeys (https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/help997)). If the option does not appear for you, your account may not be included yet. 2. **Use an authenticator app for 2-step verification.** PayPal's 2-step verification page names Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as examples, set up under **Settings**, then **Security** (PayPal Help: 2-step verification (https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/what-is-2-step-verification-help167)). 3. **Keep your number on PayPal active.** A number you stop paying for can be reassigned. Our guide to number recycling and account security (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/) explains the risk. 4. **Request codes once.** Wait for the timer, then choose the call option instead of requesting text after text. ## When is the TripoSIM number a good fit for PayPal? It fits when you want PayPal's codes on a US number while you live abroad, and it also gives you calls with US contacts, voicemail and texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/). It receives texts but cannot send them, and it cannot call 911. If you are weighing options, see how to get a US phone number from abroad (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/us-phone-number-from-abroad/), or go straight to the plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). ## Bottom line PayPal confirms phone numbers with a code by text or call, and the TripoSIM US number receives it: PayPal sent its code to the number in TripoSIM's test on October 3, 2026. Keep your PayPal account in your real country, keep the number active, and add a passkey or authenticator app as a second login step. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, and Upwork and Fiverr both sent their codes to it in TripoSIM's tests on October 3, 2026. Add it as your phone number, request the code once and enter it. Keep your profile set to your real country, which both platforms require. If you freelance from outside the US, you may want a US number for Upwork or Fiverr. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, and both platforms sent their codes to it in TripoSIM's tests. Here is how to set it up, what both platforms say about location, and where a US number helps with clients. ## Does the TripoSIM US number get Upwork and Fiverr codes? Yes. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026, and Upwork and Fiverr both sent their verification codes to its US numbers on October 3, 2026. The number receives codes from apps in general, so the list is examples, not a limit. Look up any other app in the app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/). ## How do you verify Upwork or Fiverr with the US number? 1. **Get the number** from the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) and open the TripoSIM app. Allow notifications so you see texts as they arrive. 2. **Add it as your phone number** in Upwork or Fiverr. Pick United States (+1) and type the 10 digits, with no extra leading 1 or 0. 3. **Request the code once.** It arrives as a text in the TripoSIM app. Wait a minute before asking again. 4. **Use the call option** if the platform offers one. The number takes incoming calls and has voicemail. 5. **Enter the code** and finish the check. Add an authenticator app as a second login method where the platform offers one. If the code does not arrive, check the number format, make sure the app has internet, and contact TripoSIM support from the app. ## Why must you register with your real country? Both platforms check location and act on mismatches, whatever phone number you use: - **Upwork** allows a VPN only if "You're still accurately representing your country of residence on your profile" and says a VPN is not for concealing "your true location" (Upwork Help: VPN (https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/45166686792211-How-to-properly-use-a-VPN-on-Upwork)). Mismatches can lead to "holds, verification requests, or even temporary suspensions". - **Upwork** also says it "may restrict or permanently suspend your account if we cannot verify the information you provide" (Upwork Help: represent yourself authentically (https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/18513114070419-Represent-yourself-authentically)). Location checks can ask for a government ID, a utility bill or a financial statement, and the ID and profile address must be from the same country (Upwork Help: verify your location (https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/26039887824787-How-to-verify-your-location-on-Upwork)). - **Fiverr's** community blog (July 2024) says "Misrepresenting your location for any reason is against our Terms of Service". It also says travelling and working from another country does not trigger a flag, and asks you to tell Customer Success if you move (Fiverr Community (https://community.fiverr.com/public/blogs/understanding-location-inconsistencies-2025-06-02)). A US phone number does not make you a US freelancer, and you should not use it to suggest you are one. ## Where else does a US number help freelancers? With your clients. Once a contract is running, some US clients prefer a quick call to a long message thread. Calling an overseas number can be costly or awkward for them, while a US number is an ordinary call. With the TripoSIM number you get: - A US +1 number your US clients can call like any other US number. - 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, through the app over Wi-Fi or mobile data. - Voicemail when you are asleep in another time zone. - Texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/), with no sending or replying. Before moving any client contact off-platform, check that platform's rules on communication and payments, and keep payments on the platform. Our freelancer use case page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/use-cases/freelancers/) and the guide to a second number for freelancers (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/second-number-for-freelancers/) cover setup, working hours and voicemail greetings. To look up other apps, use the app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/). ## Bottom line You can verify Upwork and Fiverr with the TripoSIM US number: both sent their codes to it in TripoSIM's tests on October 3, 2026. Keep your profile set to your real country, and use the number for US clients who want to call you too. Our explainer on what a VoIP number is (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/what-is-a-voip-number/) covers the number type, and the plans page (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/) has both plans. Line Types and Verification Codes URL: https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/what-is-a-voip-number/ Updated: 2026-10-28 Short answer: A VoIP number is a phone number that runs over the internet instead of a carrier's mobile or landline network. Apps can see the line type through a lookup. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is a VoIP number, and it receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. You saw the word "VoIP" next to a phone number and want to know what it means. This post explains what a VoIP number is, the two kinds, how apps see a number's line type, and how the TripoSIM US number handles verification codes. ## What is a VoIP number? VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. A VoIP number is a normal-looking phone number, such as a US +1 number, whose calls and texts travel over the internet rather than through a mobile carrier's cell network or a copper landline. In US rules, the FCC defines an interconnected VoIP service as one that offers real-time two-way voice, needs a broadband connection, uses internet-compatible equipment and can make and receive calls with the ordinary phone network (47 CFR 9.3 (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/section-9.3)). In plain words: it behaves like a phone number, but it runs on the internet. ## Fixed vs non-fixed VoIP: what is the difference? The FCC's rules split VoIP into two kinds. A non-fixed service is one "capable of being used from more than one location" (47 CFR 9.11 (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/section-9.11)). A fixed service is tied to one place. Lookup providers use the same split. Twilio's line-type documentation describes them like this (Twilio Docs (https://www.twilio.com/docs/lookup/v2-api/line-type-intelligence)): | Line type | What it means | Twilio's examples | |---|---|---| | Mobile | A carrier mobile number that generally can receive SMS | Your phone carrier's SIM number | | Landline | A carrier fixed line that generally can't receive SMS | A home phone line | | Fixed VoIP | "A virtual phone number associated with a physical device" | Comcast, Vonage | | Non-fixed VoIP | "A virtual phone number obtained online without requiring a physical device" | Google Voice, Enflick | When people search "non-VoIP number", they usually mean the first two rows: a number a lookup labels as a carrier mobile or landline. ## How do apps know my number is VoIP? They look it up. Many services query a phone number intelligence database with your number. The answer includes the line type (mobile, landline, fixed VoIP, non-fixed VoIP and others) and often the carrier name. Twilio, for example, sells this as a paid feature called Line Type Intelligence, and returns "unknown" when it cannot tell. So "why is my number VoIP?" usually has one of three answers: 1. **It really is VoIP.** App numbers, Google Voice and similar services sit on internet-based networks. 2. **It was ported or recycled.** A number that moved between providers can carry an old label. 3. **The database is wrong.** Lookups are not perfect. If you pay a mobile carrier for a SIM and the number shows as VoIP, ask the carrier how the number is registered. The area code plays no part. The three digits after +1 say nothing about the line type. ## Does the TripoSIM VoIP number receive verification codes? Yes. The TripoSIM US Virtual Number is a VoIP number: it works through the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, it is not a carrier SIM or mobile line, and it can be used from anywhere you have internet, which matches the non-fixed description above. It receives verification codes (OTP SMS) from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested 22 apps from October 3 to 18, 2026: WhatsApp on October 13, 2026, WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026, and apps such as Google, PayPal, Upwork and Fiverr on October 3, 2026. That list shows examples, not a limit. Look up any app in the app check tool (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/), or read our guide to a US number for verification codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/). ## What if a code does not arrive right away? 1. **Check the number.** Pick United States (+1) and type the 10 digits, with no extra leading 1 or 0. 2. **Wait for the timer.** Codes can take a minute or two. Request it once, then wait before asking again. 3. **Use the voice call option** if the app offers one. The TripoSIM number takes incoming calls and has voicemail. 4. **Keep the app connected.** The number needs the TripoSIM app and an internet connection to receive texts and calls. 5. **Contact TripoSIM support** from the app or TripoSIM's contact page (https://triposim.com/contact) if it still does not arrive. ## Where does the TripoSIM number fit? It is a US number for calls with US contacts, voicemail, receiving texts from US and Canadian senders (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/receive-sms/) and verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp, while you live abroad. It receives texts but cannot send them, and it cannot call 911. The number type comparison (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/compare-number-types/) sets out how it differs from a carrier line and a travel data eSIM. ## Bottom line A VoIP number is a phone number that runs over the internet, and apps can see its line type through a lookup. The TripoSIM number is a non-fixed VoIP number that receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, so you can use it to sign up and keep your accounts on a US number. It receives the WhatsApp Business verification code, and TripoSIM tested it on October 18, 2026. Install the WhatsApp Business app, enter the number with +1, and type in the 6-digit code. Larger companies that send messages from software use the Business Platform (Cloud API) instead. Use your TripoSIM US number for WhatsApp Business. It receives the WhatsApp Business verification code, and TripoSIM tested it on October 18, 2026. Your US customers see a familiar +1 number, and you answer them from the WhatsApp Business app wherever you are. This guide covers the set-up steps, the difference between the Business app and the Cloud API, display names, number limits and the messaging rules that keep a business number in good standing. ## How do you set up WhatsApp Business on a US number? 1. **Get your US number.** Pick a plan (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/), complete the 2-minute ID check, and choose a number by state or area code in the TripoSIM app. 2. **Install the WhatsApp Business app** from the App Store or Google Play. 3. **Enter the number.** Choose United States (+1) and type the 10 digits, with no leading 0 or extra 1. 4. **Get the code.** Keep the TripoSIM app open with internet on. The 6-digit code arrives as a text in the TripoSIM app. If the timer runs out first, choose the phone call option and the code is read to you on an incoming call. 5. **Fill in the profile.** Add your business name, category, hours and a short description. 6. **Turn on two-step verification** and add a recovery email. For more detail on each step, see how to set up WhatsApp with a US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/set-up-whatsapp-with-us-number/). ## WhatsApp Business app vs Business Platform: what's the difference? The **WhatsApp Business app** is a free app on your phone. You register it the same way you register personal WhatsApp: a 6-digit code to the number, then you chat with customers yourself. This is the right choice for freelancers, shops and small teams. The **WhatsApp Business Platform**, usually reached through the **Cloud API**, is for software. You register a number in Meta's business tools, often through a provider, and your systems send and receive messages. A number on the Platform doesn't run on a phone app. Meta says registered numbers "cannot be used with WhatsApp Messenger", but they can still be used for normal calls and texts. | | WhatsApp Business app | Business Platform (Cloud API) | |---|---|---| | Who it suits | Freelancers, shops, small teams | Companies sending messages from software | | How you register | 6-digit code by SMS or phone call | Code by SMS or voice call (`code_method`) | | Where you chat | On your phone | In your own systems or a provider's tools | | Security PIN | Two-step verification is optional but strongly advised | "You must set a two-step verification PIN" | For the Cloud API, Meta's business phone numbers guide (https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/business-phone-numbers/phone-numbers) (updated May 21, 2026) says eligible numbers must "be owned by you", "have a country and area code", "be able to receive voice calls or SMS" and "have scaled capabilities". Meta also notes that a registration call "cannot navigate an IVR", so the number has to accept the call directly. ## How many numbers can one business have? - **One number per account.** WhatsApp says an account "can only be verified with one registered phone number" (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1068436057886812/)). - **Separate numbers for each app.** Personal WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business each need their own number. A US number is a natural second number for the business side. - **On the API, new business portfolios start with two numbers.** Meta says that cap rises to 20 after business verification or once you reach a 2,000 messaging limit. - **A number in use on WhatsApp must be freed first.** Meta: "Numbers already in use with WhatsApp cannot be registered unless they are deleted first." ## What are the display name rules? On the Platform, Meta says "You must provide a display name when registering a business phone number". The name is checked against Meta's display name guidelines and verified "when you reach a higher messaging limit" (display names doc (https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/display-names), updated June 16, 2026). Read the guidelines (https://www.facebook.com/business/help/757569725593362) before you pick a name. We haven't summarized them here because we haven't checked their current text. Use the name your customers already know you by. ## Can you move a number from the app to the API? Meta's developer docs (updated June 26, 2026) describe a feature "sometimes referred to as 'Coexistence'". With it, a business can "connect their existing WhatsApp Business app account to Cloud API" through a provider's signup flow (Meta docs (https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/embedded-signup/onboarding-business-app-users)). Without Coexistence, you delete the number from WhatsApp before you register it on the API. Moving a number from the API back to the app isn't covered in the sources we checked, so ask your provider. ## Why use a US number for WhatsApp Business? A US number helps when your customers are in the US. They see a familiar +1 number, and they can call it at normal domestic rates. It suits a business based abroad that serves American clients, a freelancer with US clients, or a team that wants a US contact number on its website. For the wider set-up, see our checklist for a US business contact number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-business-contact-checklist/). The TripoSIM number gives you more than WhatsApp on the same +1 number: - **Calls:** 300 outgoing minutes a month to the US and Canada, plus incoming calls. - **Voicemail** for callers you miss. - **Texts and codes** from US and Canadian senders and from apps, received in the TripoSIM app. Sending texts is not included. - **Plans:** $100 a year or $12.99 a month. See the plans (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/plans/). Keep the plan active so the account stays yours. WhatsApp sends a code to the same number when you move to a new phone. If a plan ends, the number is held 30 days on the yearly plan or 90 days on monthly before it is released. More on keeping a number in why recycled numbers matter (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/number-recycling-account-security/), and the full WhatsApp picture is on using a US number for WhatsApp (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/whatsapp-number/). ## What messaging rules apply to a business number? WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy (https://business.whatsapp.com/policy) says you may only contact people who "have given you their mobile phone number or username" and from whom "you have received opt-in permission". The responsible-use guidance (https://faq.whatsapp.com/361005896189245/) adds: "Only send messages to those who have contacted you first or have requested you contact them on WhatsApp." In practice: - Put the number on your website, invoices and email signature, and let customers message you first. - Keep first replies to new contacts short and plain. - Get permission before you add anyone to a group, and don't bulk-message or auto-message from the Business app. If a code is slow to arrive, see WhatsApp code not received (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/whatsapp-code-not-received/). ## Bottom line For WhatsApp Business, your TripoSIM US number is a safe, reliable choice: it receives the verification code, and TripoSIM tested WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026. Register it in the Business app, turn on two-step verification, keep the plan active, and only message people who contacted you first. Companies that send from software can look at the Cloud API. On a TripoSIM US number, keep the app online with notifications allowed. Still stuck? Contact TripoSIM support. If your WhatsApp code was not received, work through the fixes below in order. Check the number format, wait for the timer, request the code once more, then ask for a phone call. Most missing codes come down to one of three things: the number was typed wrong, WhatsApp is making you wait, or the phone that should receive the code is offline. This guide covers each one, what the "phone number not valid" error usually means, and who to contact if you are still stuck. The TripoSIM US number receives verification codes from apps, including WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. TripoSIM tested WhatsApp on October 13, 2026 and WhatsApp Business on October 18, 2026. So if you are using it, the fixes below are about getting the code to reach you, not about the number itself. ## Why isn't my WhatsApp code arriving? Find your symptom in the table, then use the step-by-step list below. | Symptom | Likely cause | Fix | |---|---|---| | No SMS after a few minutes | Timer still running, or the app is offline | Wait for the timer, check the app is online, then request again once | | "Not valid" or "not a US number" | Wrong format or wrong country picked | Choose United States (+1), then type the 10 digits only | | "You have guessed the code too many times" | Too many wrong entries | Wait the full time. It can't be shortened | | Call comes, but you miss it | Notifications or microphone off, or no answer | Allow notifications and the microphone, then request the call again | | "Login not available right now" | Temporary hold | Wait. Retrying early can restart the hold | | Codes arrive you didn't ask for | Someone entered your number | Don't share the code. Turn on two-step verification | ## What are the steps to fix a missing WhatsApp code? 1. **Check the number format.** Pick United States (+1) from the country list, then type the 10-digit number. Leave out any extra 1, leading 0 or exit code. 2. **Wait for the timer.** Stay on the verification screen until the timer finishes. Leaving the screen early can time you out (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/624702592469992/)). 3. **Request the code again, once.** When the timer ends, ask for a new SMS code a single time and give it a few minutes. 4. **Use "Call me".** If the text still hasn't come, tap **Call me**. An automated voice reads the 6-digit code (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/796575231429493/)). On a TripoSIM number the call rings in the TripoSIM app. 5. **Check the number is active in the TripoSIM app.** Open the app and confirm your number shows there, your plan is active and the phone has Wi-Fi or mobile data. TripoSIM says calls ring even when the app is closed once notifications and the microphone are allowed; a phone that is off, offline or has notifications blocked does not ring, and callers reach voicemail. 6. **Don't guess and don't keep requesting.** Wrong guesses and repeated requests add longer waits. If you see "You have guessed the code too many times", wait for the full time. 7. **Restart and update.** Restart the phone, update WhatsApp and the TripoSIM app, then try once more. 8. **Contact TripoSIM support.** If nothing arrives after these steps, write to support@triposim.com or use the TripoSIM contact page (https://triposim.com/contact). Give them your US number and the time you requested the code. ## How do you make sure the TripoSIM app receives the code? The code reaches you inside the TripoSIM app, so the app has to be ready before you start WhatsApp. - **Internet on.** Calls and texts need Wi-Fi or mobile data. Open a web page to check. - **Notifications allowed.** On iPhone, add the TripoSIM web app to your Home Screen. On Android, install the TripoSIM app. Allow notifications so the text and the call show up. - **Microphone allowed.** The "Call me" code comes as a voice call, and the app needs the microphone to answer it. - **Plan active.** The number must be showing in the app after your ID check and payment. Test it before you register: call your US number from another phone and check it rings. For the full setup, see how to set up WhatsApp with a US number (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/blog/set-up-whatsapp-with-us-number/). ## What does "This phone number is not valid" mean? Almost always, the format. A missing +1, an extra leading 1 or 0, or the wrong country picked can all make a valid number look invalid. Pick United States, type the 10 digits, and try again. If WhatsApp still won't take a number you know is active, ask TripoSIM support to confirm the number on your account. ## What does "Login not available right now" mean? WhatsApp calls this a temporary hold. It isn't about whether your code arrived. Wait it out, because trying again before the hold ends may start a new waiting period (help center (https://faq.whatsapp.com/1081991807340123/)). If the screen says the number can't use WhatsApp, that is about how an account was used, not the code. ## When should you contact support? Contact TripoSIM support when: - you've waited out the timer and tried both SMS and **Call me**, and nothing arrived; - the app is online with notifications on, and a test call from another phone doesn't ring; - the number doesn't show in the TripoSIM app after payment. Support can check the number and your plan. For codes from other apps, see our guide to a US number for verification codes (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/guides/us-number-for-verification-codes/) and the app code checker (https://usvirtualnumbers.com/tools/app-check/). ## Bottom line Fix the format, wait for the timer, request again once, then use **Call me**. That solves most missing codes. On a TripoSIM US number, keep the app online with notifications and the microphone allowed, and contact TripoSIM support if the code still doesn't come.
